They were flown from Heathrow by the Royal Canadian Air Force and
landed in Charlottetown, Canada's smallest capital city - originally named
after Queen Charlotte, consort of George III. Well-wishers gave the couple a
warm welcome and seemed charmed by Sophie. "She liked chatting and she'd
crack a joke every now and then," said one 16-year-old boy. "I
figured she would be more snobby, but she was real nice." |

THE EARL AND COUNTESS OF WESSEX

are voted a hit on their
first official overseas visit to Canada's Prince Edward Island
The Earl and Countess of Wessex last week returned from a successful
five-day visit to Canada. It was their first official overseas tour and has
been hailed in the Canadian press as a public relations coup. Sophie won hearts
with her down-to-earth, relaxed style.- She mingled and chatted easily with the
crowds, even stroking a young well-wisher's pet guinea pig at one point. At a
formal dinner she looked every inch a member of the royal family, exuding
confidence in a stylish champagne-coloured silk gown and the diamond tiara she
wore at the wedding to Prince Edward a year ago.
The couple spent the first part of their trip on the appropriately named Prince
Edward Island near Nova Scotia, which is famous for bringing us Anne of Green
Gables, potatoes and lobster.
