The couple, who met in
1998, have been
"officially" dating since March last year
Cynics thought the relationship wouldn't last, let
alone produce a child, but Catherine Zeta Jones, 30, and Michael Douglas, 55,
have proved them all wrong with the birth of their first baby.

Michael Douglas was born last Tuesday at the celebrities' hospital, the
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills. His parents chose the internet to
break the news. "Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas are the proud parents
of a 7lb 7oz, 21-and-a-half inch baby boy!" the message read on Michael's
website, michaeldouglas.com. "Mother, baby and father are all doing very well."
Michael is said to have been present at the birth, having
promised to hold Catherine's hand. Also there was her mother Pat, who had flown
in to Los Angeles from Swansea. Despite rumours that he was late, Dylan arrived
bang on time, and in an easy, swift birth, according to a spokesman.
The baby's name is said to have been a compromise, but has nevertheless
bridged a cultural gap between the couple. "We love the name because it is
known by both the Welsh and the Americans," said a friend of the family.
Catherine's choice was influenced by her love of the Swansea-born poet Dylan
Thomas and the fact that it reflected her Welsh roots. Michael meanwhile, is a
lifelong fan of the singer Bob Dylan. Now that Dylan has arrived safely, the
next event to celebrate will be his parents' marriage. Rumours have recently
surfaced - so far neither confirmed or denied by the couple - that the wedding,
initially planned to coincide with their joint birthday on September 25, has
been postponed. But whenever or wherever it takes place, Dylan is sure to be
the most important guest there. |
