SIR PAUL McCARTNEY AND HEATHER MILLS

Two years after the death of his beloved wife Linda he begins to find happiness with the brave model and charity campaigner

Rumours of romance between the 57-year-old former Beatle Paul McCartney and brave blonde model Heather, 32, who lost part of one leg in a traffic accident, have simmered for some months. They met a year ago, at a charity event when he played guitar and sang backing vocals on Voice, the single she recorded in aid of limbless war victims. Paul, it’s said, donated £150,000 to her trust for those who had lost limbs in Bosnia. Later, they saw in the millennium together, and recently holidayed in the Turks and Caicos Islands, sunbathing and strolling on the sands. Now, Sir Paul has expressed deeper feelings than those of friendship between two committed charity campaigners. “She’s a very impressive woman, incredibly committed and determined,” he says. “I admire her greatly. We are an item.” Now that the secret is out, he has stressed that the relationship is still very new and that they hope to develop it away from prying eyes. “What we want most of all for the moment is a private life,” says Sir Paul. “It’s very early days for us and it’s a wait-and-see situation.”

story of the week
Unlike Linda, Sir Paul’s first wife,
Heather has had a rags-to-riches career.
When her mother left home, she cared for
Fiona and their brother Shane, on £1 a week,
sometimes resorting to shoplifting.
