Take Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes, for instance. The pair, who first sparked dating rumours (2) in 2011 and who have two young daughters, kept us guessing for years. It wasn’t until autumn 2022 that Eva hinted that she and Ryan were married. The Hitch actress responded to marriage rumours on the Kyle and Jackie O Show podcast, saying: “But who says we weren’t already? I like to keep it all mysterious. I’m a very mysterious woman.” A few days later she seemingly put the matter to rest (3) when she referred to Ryan as her husband.
International music sensation Ed Sheeran went completely low-key when he wed his childhood friend Cherry Seaborn back in January 2019. The British couple had a tiny ceremony, exchanging vows at midnight, with the Shape of You singer later reminiscing on the magical day on the Table Manners podcast: “No one knew, no one came to it, we lit candles and we got married, went back and had a curry.” A few months later they invited their friends and family to celebrate their wedding, hosting a big party, though phones were banned and secrecy the order of the day (4).

Amanda Seyfried – star of Mamma Mia and Mean Girls – eloped with her actor partner Thomas Sadoski in 2017. Breaking the news on The Late Late Show with James Corden a week after they said their vows, Thomas revealed that it had been an absolutely perfect day, saying: “It was beautiful. It was everything that it should be. It was just the two of us talking to each other."
And you might be surprised to learn that Beyoncé and Jay-Z also had a secret ceremony, held in the singer’s vast New York penthouse apartment in 2008. With just 40 guests present, Queen Bey kept details of the special occasion close to her chest (5), though nine years on she gave fans a few peeks in the music video for her song Die with You, which includes a montage of sweet clips from the couple’s relationship.
