A bio-eautiful royal garden

King Charles’s amazing plans for Sandringham House

Por hola.com

Located in Norfolk, a two-and-a-half-hour drive from London, Sandringham House was one of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite residences, where she hosted her whole family each year at Christmas. And it seems that her son King Charles III also has a soft spot for the sprawling property, choosing to spend a relaxing few days there with his wife Queen Camilla after his recent coronation ceremony.

The nature-loving King is currently in the middle of making changes to the estate’s West Lawn. He is creating an imaginative new topiary garden there, where the bushes and trees will be sculpted into fascinating shapes to delight visitors. That's not all; the feature is being designed with  climate change in mind. The plant species are equipped to deal with newly emerging weather patterns and will increase biodiversity in the area.

There’s a sweet story behind the plans, which are the work of award-winning landscape designers Landform. In 2019, speaking to the Telegraph, the King recalled a similar garden that had been established by his great-great-grandmother Queen Alexandra at Sandringham. He reminisced: “I can still remember being taken as a child, being wheeled in my pram even, and it was so special, these clipped animal shapes, peacocks, birds. I’ve never forgotten it. I would say it had a profound influence on me.”

And the West Lawn itself has an interesting history. It was once the site of a formal Parterre Garden in the 1800s, before being turned over for food production as part of the Dig for Victory campaign that helped keep Britons fed during the Second World War.
