Prince Ernst of Hanover has been in intensive care at Ruber Internacional clinic in Madrid since the night of April 3. According to Vanitatis, he was admitted through the emergency room. His partner, Claudia Stilianopoulos, confirmed the seriousness of his condition, clarifying that it is unrelated to the hip issues he faced recently.
Ernst de Hannover’s hospitalization stems from a longstanding health issue, sources confirm. According to ¡HOLA!, the Prince of Hannover has been unable to receive visitors while in the ICU, though his family has closely followed his progress, with several making trips to Madrid’s Ruber Internacional clinic to speak directly with his doctors. Claudia Stilianopoulos, his girlfriend, has been a frequent presence at the hospital, as have his son Christian de Hannover and Christian’s wife, Alessandra de Osma.
Given the severity of Ernst’s condition, his loved ones have faced this ordeal with deep concern. Encouragingly, his treatment has led to steady improvement. Doctors are hopeful that he will soon be moved from the ICU to a regular ward, allowing him to reunite with family. Once that happens, Claudia, Christian, and Alessandra are expected to be by his side even more often.
Prince Ernst of Hanover was last seen publicly on March 21, attending his daughter-in-law’s 37th birthday celebration. Exclusive photos published by ¡HOLA! showed him looking fully recovered from the hip surgery he underwent in November following a fall. The prince had previously been seen using a walker on February 26, when he celebrated his 71st birthday in Madrid with Claudia Stilianopoulos and his family—an appearance also captured in exclusive images.
But his hip issues are only part of a long history of serious health problems. International outlets reported in 2005 that he suffered acute pancreatitis and ended up in a coma. In 2011, he was hospitalized in Ibiza with an abdominal infection. He underwent emergency heart surgery in 2016, and another alarming hospitalization followed in Austria in 2018.
Settled in Spain since the summer of 2021, Prince Ernst of Hanover has been in a relationship with Stilianopoulos, daughter of Pitita Ridruejo and Filipino diplomat Mike Stilianopoulos. Claudia has become his rock, his unwavering companion, and the main reason behind his move to Madrid. Living in the Spanish capital also allows him to be closer to his son Christian and his beloved grandchildren, Nicolás, Sofía, and Alexia. Now, they are all eagerly awaiting the prince’s recovery so they can enjoy his company once again.
