How Princess Isabella of Denmark's 18th birthday will be celebrated

New portraits of Queen Mary's daughter have been released

Princess Isabella of Denmark is gearing up to celebrate a milestone birthday! Queen Mary and King Frederik's daughter turns 18 on Monday, April 21. Ahead of her big day, the Princess' birthday will be fêted with celebrations in Aarhus and Copenhagen that "pay tribute to the communities of the young generation with culture, creativity, sustainability and volunteerism as the principal elements."

The Danish Royal House announced the official events on March 6. The first one, taking place on April 11 at Aarhus City Hall, "will be a tribute to the city’s many young talents in the creative fields such as music, sport, cuisine and design." At the event, young Aarhusian designers will present a fashion show with a focus on sustainability and future materials, while upcoming musicians will entertain on the stage, elite dancers in training will put on a performance and students from vocational education programs will present a birthday cake.

According to the Royal House, there will be approximately 100 young people from local youth organizations and educations among the invited guests at the event in Aarhus, as well as an additional 50 young Aarhusians with companions, who will get the opportunity to participate via a lottery.

The second celebration marking Isabella's birthday is scheduled for April 15. Six days before her turning 18, the Princess and the royal family will attend a birthday performance on The Old Stage of The Royal Danish Theatre. "The Royal House of Denmark, in cooperation with The Royal Danish Theatre, invites the young generation to entertaining, exciting and varied performing arts that are both classical and modern.The theatre will be filled with a young audience, as more than 1000 young people ranging from the ages of 17 to 24 from the whole Realm will have the opportunity to get tickets to the birthday performance via a lottery," per the Royal House.

New portraits of Isabella, dressed in a blue button-down shirt and pantsuit, accompanied the birthday events announcement on March 6. The pictures of the Princess were taken by photographer Steen Evald in Frederik VIII’s Palace at Amalienborg. 

Isabella is the King and Queen's second child and eldest daughter. She is currently second in line to the Danish throne, after her older brother, Crown Prince Christian. Their father, King Frederik, ascended the throne in January 2024 following his mother Queen Margrethe II's abdication. In addition to Princess Isabella and Crown Prince Christian, Mary and Frederik are parents to 14-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.
