Oops! King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden has apologized after getting his newborn's grandchild's name wrong. At the Council of State held on Monday, His Majesty reportedly announced that Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia's daughter was named Inse, instead of Ines.
The Swedish Royal Court's Director of Information, Margareta Thorgren, told Svensk Damtidning that the King said the wrong name because the Princess' names were kept a secret up until the council. Margareta said (translated to English), "The King is very sorry that he said the wrong name. The reason he said the wrong name is that the names were kept secret until just before the council, even from the King."
The royal baby's name was announced three days after her arrival. A sweet photo of the little Princess sleeping, taken by mom Sofia, accompanied the announcement on Feb. 10.
A Te Deum thanksgiving service was held on Monday to mark the birth of Ines. Members of the Swedish royal family, including the newborn's dad and big brothers, Prince Alexander, 8, Prince Gabriel, 7, and Prince Julian, 3, were in attendance.
Sofia and Carl Philip's baby girl, whose full name is Princess Ines Marie Lilian Silvia, was born on Feb. 7 at Stockholm's Danderyd Hospital. She is the Prince Couple's fourth child.
Following the birth of his first daughter, Carl Philip said (translated to English), "We are happy to welcome our newborn daughter into the world. The big brothers are now looking forward to getting to know their new little sister."
The baby, who has been granted the Duchy of Västerbotten, is currently is eighth in line to the Swedish throne. Like her older brothers, Ines is a member of the royal family but not of the royal house, and therefore will not "enjoy the style of Royal Highness." In 2019, the King of Sweden removed Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine's respective children from the Royal House.
It was revealed in September that Sofia and Carl Philip were expecting their fourth child. Months after the announcement, the Princess told Vogue Scandinavia that she "always, always, always dreamt of a family." Sofia said, "It’s one of my biggest goals in life. Not everyone has that – I had that."
“Both me and my husband come from a family of five – with three kids – so we thought that that would be a good number, and we felt quite satisfied with that," the Princess added. "But, gratefully, there’s a bonus on the way. We feel very humble and grateful. It was maybe not in the plan, but now we are very, very excited. Especially the kids.”
