From ‘Squeak’ to ‘Wombat’: Royal family’s nicknames revealed and they are a bit unusual

Some are named after a green vegetable and others just called by the first three letters of their name

Like any traditional family, the royal family also has unusual nicknames to refer to their loved ones. From unusual nicknames like Cabbage to Wombat, every member is referred by a shortened version of their name. While Meghan Markle’s mom, Doria Ragland calls her sweet daughter flower, Prince Harry refers to her by a different nickname. “My mom has always called me ‘flower’. Nickname since I was a little girl,” Meghan once revealed on a social post. But her dad calls her “bean”.

The Duchess of Cambridge has received different nicknames in the past such as “Squeak” during school, “Princess-in-waiting” by her Marlborough College school friends, before she even met her Prince charming. Discover the sweet nicknames the British royal family use with their relatives.

The Duchess of Sussex is called by her loved ones, Meg. Recently, the nickname was disclosed in text messages from the Prince to Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle. The Duchess’ privacy was revealed during a lawsuit against Associated Newspapers for violating privacy and misusing information.

Have you ever wondered what Meghan calls Prince Harry? During an interview withTom Bradby on their ITV documentary Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, Meghan accidentally called Harry by his first initial, H. “In all honesty, I have said for a long time to H - that is what I call him - it‘s not enough to just survive something, that’s not the point of life,” she shared. The endearing nickname makes sense as it is short and sweet. However, Harry’s friends refer to him as Spike. He previously owned a Facebook account under the name Spike Wells.

The nicknamed was revealed during an interview with Vogue but her mom also calls her by a different nickname - Trixie Belle. “Happy birthday my Trixie - Belle so proud of you xx,” shared her mother Sarah, Duchess of York for her 30th birthday on a social media post.

During an interview with British Vogue, Princess Beatrice let slip her nickname for Eugenie. While they discussed their sisterly bond, Beatrice called her by her short name “Euge”. In the conversation, Beatrice detailed her sister’s wedding plans and says “Euge is amazing” and how she is a “modern bride”.

William Arthur Philip Louis is best known by his close friends as Wills. However, during his time as a student at the University of St Andrews in Scotland he was referred to as Steve to maintain a low profile and unnecessary attention. Kate refers to his Prince in a different way. It was revealed during the News of the World hacking trial, from William’s phone that he referred to Kate as “baby” and ”babykins”. William also revealed in an interview with NBC that Diana called her Wombat, “It began when I was two. I‘ve been rightfully told because I can’t remember back that far. But when we went to Australia with our parents, and the wombat, you know, that’s the local animal. So I just basically got called that. Not because I look like a wombat, or maybe I do.”

In a recent encounter with a dog walker in Berkshire, Prince George referred to himself as Archie. The woman who was asked to not take a picture of George engaged in small talk and he revealed the name, even though she knew who he was. “To my astonishment he said ‘I’m called Archie’ with a big smile on his face. I don’t know why he calls himself Archie but kids often play with their names and I think it’s lovely,” mentioned the dogwalker to the media.

Kate Middleton is known as darling and babe by her husband but she was called Squeak while in school. As a senior, Kate was nicknamed Princess-in-waiting by her fellow classmates at Marlborough College.
