Queen Margrethe of Denmark traditionally has a balcony wave from the royal palace to celebrate her birthday but in 2020 celebrations for her 80th birthday are very low-key due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Danish Queen, who was married to Prince Henrik from 1967 until his death in 2018, has two sons, Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim, and each of them have four children each giving this royal grandmother a fun, busy time when the family gets together! From her eldest Prince Nikolai, a fashion model who has walked the runways of Paris, through to her youngest granddaughter Princess Athena, take a closer look at Queen Margrethe’s grandchildren.

PRINCE NIKOLAI
Prince Nikolai was born in 1999 to Queen Margrethe’s younger son Prince Joachim. The model’s mother is Joachim’s ex-wife Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, who divorced the Prince in 2005. Handsome Nikolai has walked the runways of Paris and London and also studies at Copenhagen Business School.
PRINCE FELIX
Nikolai’s brother Prince Felix arrived in 2002, becoming Queen Margrethe and her late husband Prince Henrik’s second grandchild. He studies at Old Hellerup Gymnasium High School and has an intership at Herlufsholm.
PRINCE CHRISTIAN, FUTURE KING
Along came future king Prince Christian, son of Crown Prince Frederik and Australian-born Crown Princess Mary, in 2005. He was due to be confirmed in spring 2020 at the Chapel of Fredensborg Palace but due to the COVID-19 pandemic the ceremony was been postponed until later in the year.
First granddaughter
After three grandsons, Queen Margrethe got her first granddaughter in 2007 when Crown Princess Mary gave birth to her and Frederik’s second child, Princess Isabella. She attends Tranegårdsskolen in Gentofte, the same public school as her older brother.
PRINCE HENRIK
Prince Joachim’s third son, his first child with second wife Princess Marie, was born in 2009. Named for his paternal and maternal grandfathers, he attends Sct. Joseph Søstrenes Skole – a Catholic private school in Ordrup.
Double Trouble!
In 2011 Queen Margrethe was doubly overjoyed with the arrival Mary and Frederik’s twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine. After their birth, dad Frederik joked about calling his son Elvis as the twins share a birthday with the King of Rock and Roll.
PRINCESS ATHENA
And last, but certainly not least, came Princess Athena in 2012, daughter of Prince Joachim and Princess Marie.
A DEDICATED GRANDMA – QUEEN MARGRETHE
As she gradually concedes more work to her children and takes a less prominent role in public life, Queen Margrethe – known to friends and loved ones as Daisy, obviously takes great joy in her grandchildren.
