Following the devastation caused by the Los Angeles wildfires, which resulted in over $14.8 Billion in damages, multiple homes destroyed, 40,000 acres burned, and the loss of many homes for the community, there was a positive moment for Casey Colvin, a resident who searched for his missing dog Oreo for five days during the Palisades fires.
Colvin was not home when the fires started. However, his two dogs, Oreo and Tika Tika Tika were home. Oreo ran out of the house amid the commotion, and their emotional reunion went viral. "Oh honey, you're alive, you're alive!" he can be seen yelling at the dog in a video shared online, "Oh, thank you, God!"
Moments after Oreo was rescued by a firefighter, the fire took over the structure where the dog was hiding. "OREO IS SAFE!!! We spent all day yesterday trying to get in the fire zone and search for him, we made it in but were not able to find him," Cathi Perez, animal rescuer, shared on Instagram.
"This morning [Colvin] got a call that someone had eyes on him and we raced there! Once we were in we went to the “house”, which is no longer standing and there he was at the top of the neighbor’s driveway!" she detailed. "He stared in disbelief, is that you Daddy? Then a slow walk turned into a tail wagging run!!!"
Unfortunately, the owner lost his home during the fires. "Soon as we left we went to meet and thank the fireman who broke the door down and got them out, minutes before the fires came over the hill and burned it to the ground, both dogs would have died," Perez added.
"It’s a beautiful day and Oreo is safe!!! Thank you to all the first responders out there who run towards the danger protecting us all!!!"
