Coming Soon: New iPhone 12

Six new features on Apples iPhone 12

UPDATED OCTOBER 19, 2020 3:48 PM EDT

The iPhone 12 release date is set for October 23, and you will be able to pre-order it as of this past Friday, October 16. However, you will not be able to pre-order the iPhone 12 mini until November 6, and the phone will be officially out on November 13.

There are four new models. iPhone 12 mini (5.4in), iPhone 12 (6.1) iPhone 12 Pro (6.1in) and iPhone 12 Pro Max (6.7 in). The two 6.1 in phones will officially go on sale on October 23, but they are available for pre-order as of October 16. The mini and the max on the other hand will not be available until next month.

The starting prices for the new models are as fallows. iPhone 12 mini: From $699. iPhone 12: From $799. iPhone 12 Pro: From $999. iPhone 12 Pro Max: From $1,099.

The design for the new models is going back in time to the squarer-edged design of the iPhone 4 instead of sticking to the curved-edge style that we have gotten used to in these last years. Whether this is good news or not is based on your personal preferences.

There are two significant changes to the design, one being more practical and the other cosmetic. On practical terms, Apple needed to improve certain aspects of screen strength.

1. Ceramic Shield

1. Ceramic Shield: This new iPhone includes a Ceramic Shield. What it has is nano-ceramic crystals to improve toughness, offering 4 times better drop protection than previous generation, and it is tougher than any smartphone glass. Let’s see if these affirmations are in fact true and the new iPhone passes the drop test.

2. 5G

2. 5G: When Apple launched this product last week, they included what they called “the most exciting step yet” which is the support for 5G. This is the aspect of the new phone that has been played to the biggest, having presenters at various points standing in front of a, presumably virtual, 5G logo, which reached almost the entire stage. What does 5G mean? For starters, faster internet access when away from home Wi-Fi, but the specific speeds depend a lot on the carrier and time and location.

3. Cameras

3. Cameras: Looks like this year Apple hasn’t added any lenses, but the new LiDAR scanner gives way to new photographic opportunities. Including faster autofocus in low light, and even a night mode for portraits and time-lapse. There is even a new feature, Smart HDR, to combine multiple exposures and difficult lighting conditions.

4. Colors

4. Colors: On a more superficial aspect, the new iPhone 12 and 12 mini come in a variety of colors, including white, black, blue, green and (Product) Red. The new green and blue are, if I do say so myself, beautiful. The 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max some in silver, gold, Graphite and the totally new Pacific Blue, giving these two models a more sophisticated look.

5. MagSafe

5. MagSafe: Yes, its back! Apple started phasing this out in 2016, but folks it has come back. MagSafe includes a system of magnets to hold a wireless charging pad in the right place to charge the iPhone. Now we won’t be frustrated when we pick up our phone from the charging pad and find that it didn’t charge because it wasn’t on the sweet sport and couldn’t draw any power.

6. No charger or headphones included!

6. No charger or headphones included!: With a new screen, maximum level camera quality and many other things, there was something that caught the attention of social media users, it will be sold WITHOUT a charger or headphones. Yes, you have read correctly. The newest apple product will be sold without its basic accessories that have always been part of the product box. For the first time, Apple has announced that phones will come without these accessories as part of its initiative to reduce the environmental impact of its products, working in favor of the planet. Because without the items, the cases of the iPhones could be up to 70% smaller than they are now, this will also have an impact on the emissions derived from the shipments. But, since clearly, at least, without a charger, the mobile cannot work, you will have to buy the two items separately
