Thanks to social media and other sources, celebrities are opening up about their personal – and quite varied – mental health battles and sharing their coping strategies with their followers. Alicia Keys
The Good Job singer is a vocal proponent of meditation and Kundalini yoga. Taking to Facebook in March, Alicia opened up about her practice to encourage others to try it. Calling meditation a ‘beautiful tool,’ she explained that although Kundalini is her preferred method, any type of meditation is valid: “The most important thing is to have a moment to yourself, to tune into your spirit.” She says the daily routine gives her clarity and calm for the day ahead and she tries to fit it in first thing, before the kids are up.
Gisele Bundchen
She’s long been an advocate for the environment, healthy eating and yoga. The Brazilian model and mom-of-two started practicing yoga and meditation in her 20s after experiencing panic attacks. “Yoga can be helpful in so many ways,” Gisele said. ”Whether it involves music or mantras or breath work or meditation, it is a powerful and beautiful spiritual practice. Yoga gave me back my life.”
Oprah Winfrey
Oprah has opened up in the past about how learning to meditate was one of the “most life-enhancing things I ever did.” A few years prior she also revealed how she had brought a teacher into her production company, Harpo Studios, to teach the employees how to meditate. Oprah said: “[It] brings a kind of energy and an intensity of energy, an intention that we have never had before.”
Kerry Washington
The Little Fires Everywhere actress became a certified yoga instructor while on a seven-month stay in India after college. Recently, she has taken to Instagram to share her love of mindful movement with followers and try to raise funds for the BLM movement and LGBTQ causes, saying: “I’m not a teacher or trainer but sharing some of my practice has definitely helped me have a better connection to my breathing, my body and WITH YOU!”
Camila Cabello
The Havana singer has been struggling with OCD and crippling anxiety over the past few years. Camila took to Instagram in March to share something that has been a game-changer for her: “Meditation has changed my life in the last few months...Not only does it help in times like this with stress and anxiety, meditation is the practice of strengthening habits like empathy, love, and compassion — making you feel more connected to not only everybody around you, but living beings in general like animals, plants, and the earth, which is a living being, itself.”

Beyonce
In an interview with ELLE, Beyonce spoke of using tools like meditation and breathing techniques to help her body recover from child birth. “After having a difficult pregnancy, I took a year to focus on my health. I have researched information on homeopathic medicines,” the Crazy In Love singer said. “I don’t just put any prescription in my body. My diet is important, and I use tools like acupuncture, meditation, visualization and breathing exercises.”
Halle Berry
The Monster’s Ball actress credits yoga and meditation with bringing much-needed calmness into her life. “I think it’s absolutely essential that we all find ways to establish calm within ourselves amidst the uncertainty,” she shared with Women’s Health. She often posts on Instagram about her wellness journey, saying: “My meditative practice is my way to remain strong and centered for myself as well as my children when things are overwhelming”

Opening up to Glamour magazine in 2018, Tracee revealed that: “I have a toolbox of ways I can find support; journaling is helpful or meditation.” And she recently took to Instagram to share one of her breathing techniques with her fans, telling them: “We must also be active about our self care... I use breath to connect me to the present moment and to create space in my body. I use sound as a way to release vibrationally and energetically.”

Speaking to Extra, the actress has spoken out about life in lockdown and how practicing activities such as meditation has been crucial for her mental health, saying: “Meditation or going for a walk, being kind to your body... Those little things make a difference ultimately.”
Meghan Markle
With her mom as a yoga instructor, it’s no surprise that the Duchess of Sussex is a fan of this ancient practice. Talking to Best Health in 2016, she said, “Yoga is my thing. My mom is a yoga instructor, and I started doing mommy-and-me yoga with her when I was seven. I was very resistant as a kid, but she said, ‘Flower, you will find your practice – just give it time.’”

The Poker Face singer has found that meditation is a key technique in helping battle mental health issues, and she also likes to encourage her followers to practice with her too. In 2017, Lady Gaga took to Instagram to encourage a ‘world peace’ meditation session, writing: “4 anyone who’d like to join, I’m doing a 20 minute moment of meditation/silence/prayer on my InstagramLive for calming of the [world emoji]...My intention is to provide a forum for us all connect to around the world, as a calling for world peace and inner peace. We are one body, I believe we can calm inflammation in the earth by calming each other. #meditation #prayer #silence.”

The Lose You To Love Me singer has had long-running battles with anxiety and depression. For Selena, yoga and meditation remain her go-to when searching for inner peace.
Demi Lovato
Another singer who has been open about her depression and mental health issues is Demi Lovato . The singer has been an advocate of meditation for almost a decade. In a past interview promoting her New York Times Bestseller Staying Strong: 365 days a year, she said, “I meditate in the morning and take ten minutes out of my day to read inspirational quotes that I’ve come up with on my own. I wanted to put them out there so that my fans would know how I’ve managed to stay strong.”
Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston has long cited yoga and meditation as her the reason for her physical and mental balance. Her instructor Mandy Ingber (seen here with Jennifer at her Yogalosophy book launch) explained the benefits of the practice: “The cardiovascular of yoga, it gets the heart pumping, all the blood to the extremities, it synchronizes the breath with the movement.”
Jennifer herself also revealed that mindfulness is crucial to her wellbeing, saying to Shape magazine: “...meditation, which I do first thing when I wake up before I have my coffee because if I get out of the room I won‘t sit back down. So, I’ll start with that to just kind of calm myself before I head out to exercise.”

Lizzo
Melissa Viviane Jefferson, aka Lizzo, hosted a meditation on Instagram Live in March to encourage her fans to find some calm in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The Detroit-born singer posted the resulting video to social media afterwards, including the caption: “A meditation and mantra to promote healing during this global crisis.”
She also addressed her followers during the recording, saying: “We’re going to come together and take deep breaths and we’re going to join in agreement, and we’re going to try to eliminate the fear as much as we can, as we work together during this trying time, during this global pandemic.”
Kelly Rowland
The former Destiny’s Child star practices yoga and meditation as much as possible. In an interview with Us in 2019, Rowland spoke of how she tries to “actually make sure that I make time” for meditation each day. “You can just shut things off for a minute. Even if it’s five minutes, ten minutes, I swear by meditation. I feel like it’s a way to kind of empty out all your thoughts and be able to put things into perspective.”
Rowland also credits using apps. “You have to find the one that you like and sometimes you might even find it in a nature sound,” she added.

The Duchess of Cambridge invited a yoga instructor from the island of Mustique to her 2011 wedding. She also took pre-natal yoga classes in prepation for the birth of Prince George in 2013 and has carried on practicing ever since.

Actress and wife of Justin Timberlake, Jessica has long been a fan of yoga, opening up to Well and Good magazine about it she revealed: “I love the lizard posture, and I like all the standing positions that are really activated by the hips, like the warrior two, the reverse warrior and the runner‘s thrust. I love to hold all those postures where you activate your hips and lower limbs.”
Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore is keen to pass down her love for yoga to her children and participated in a cute yoga class with her daughter Olive, who rocked the workout in a princess gown! She’s often talked about her love of the popular exercise, saying: “Being quiet and still can be bring some of the most powerful things to our bodies…So I want to promote being a long, long, long-time yogie.”
Hilaria Baldwin
Of course one of the most vocal advocates of the benefits of yoga is Hilaria Balwin , who frequently shares tips and videos on her Instagram page. Talking to Well and Good, she explained that yoga has helped her deal with difficult times in her life and her parenting journey. “I tell my students when they’re in a hard pose to just remember that this is temporary,” she explains. “It’s the same when you’re going through a difficult life transitio n— it might be difficult at that moment, but you’re going to figure it out.”
