Lou Lopez Sénéchal from the University of Connecticut is the first player born in Mexico to be drafted into the WNBA. This achievement marks a significant stride not only for the professional basketball league but also for Latina athletes that dream and aspire to pursue a career in the sport.

Her milestone comes a year after Evina Westbrook became the first Mexican-American to be drafted by the Minnesota Lynx, who now plays for the Phoenix Mercury.

Her path to the WNBA and college basketball was marked by unconventional challenges. Born in Guadalajara, located in the Mexican state of Jalisco, López Sénéchal has a Mexican father and a French mother. After her parents separated when she was 5 years old, she stayed with her mother in Grenoble, France.

While the basketball player has had an unconventional career, she has always stood out. She studied in Europe, where she started playing basketball at the young age of eight, continued playing in high school and then at the North Atlantic Academy (2017-2018) in Dublin, Ireland, where she also lived.
