Sofia Huerta is a professional soccer player and members of the US Women’s National Team. She has had a nontraditional career though, one that represents her duality. While she played for the Mexican national team, on 2017, she achieved her life long dream of playing for the U.S, making her the first player to play for and against the country.
Despite playing her youth and some of her senior career in Mexico, Huerta was born in the Boise, Idaho. She comes from a bilingual household, with her father being born and raised in Puebla, Mexico, and her mother being a native of Wisconsin.
Huerta wanted to play for the Women’s Soccer Team for most of her life, but couldn’t because she wasn’t ranked high enough to be selected for the professional’s women team.
After many years of hard work and effort, she finally got the call from the US National Team, making a one time switch that she never doubted.
“So many of my family members live in Mexico, but truthfully, the support from them is incredible. They just want me to fulfill my dreams. They were there supporting me when I played for Mexico, and they’re now supporting me when I’m playing for the USA,” she said, following her switch to the US Women’s Soccer team.
Despite changing teams, Huerta respects her Mexican teammates and believes her experience has been fulfilling and important. “Recently I got an Instagram message from one of the girls on the team that said, ‘I’m so excited to see you.’ It was something so simple but I wasn’t necessarily expecting so it was such a sweet message,” she said.
Huerta has had a prolific career, playing in a variety of teams that include the Chicago Red Stars, the Houston Dash and OL Reign.
