Xochitl Gomez is the Latina rising star poised to take the entertainment industry by storm. Known for her portrayal of Dawn Schafer in season 1 of the Netflix streaming series The Baby-Sitters Club, Gomez is making her way up to the big screen.
The Mexican descent star, whose name means “flower” in Nahuatl, an indigenous language of Mexico, brought to life America Chavez in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Forbes recently named Gomez a 30 under 30 artist: Hollywood and entertainment.
Gomez debuted in Hollywood as the LGBTQ+ Latina superhero. In her role as America Chavez, Gomez spoke about her character’s impact on fellow Latinas when they see the story is far away from stereotypes.
“It’s huge that I get to represent these communities that maybe haven’t felt seen before,” she said. “And you really do see her—I mean, how do you miss her? She’s on the poster! How crazy is that?”
According to the actress, America is “a positive representation of Latinas in particular because, in the past, there hasn’t been much of that. America is positive, charismatic, and she’s resilient.”
As reported by Los Angeles Times, Gomez beat out “thousands” of actors who auditioned for the same role. “She’s done such a fantastic job on her debut [as] one of the youngest actresses to join the MCU,” actor Benedict Wong said at the film’s Hollywood premiere. “For a film of such huge magnitude, there’s a lot of pressure there on a kid like that. [It’s] parallel, in a way, with her character that crashes into a new world and [Gomez] crashing into the MCU.”
The movie’s co-producer Mitch Bell, said all eyes were on Gomez, and she delivered. “Xochitl knew that she had a big weight on her shoulders — that she actually had to deliver this character because there was expectations,” Bell said. “But I think that she didn’t let that squash her performance. ... She knew that she needed to bring this great representation, and she did.”
