She is everything women’s tennis needs, and much more! This year, there is one name that will always be remembered in tennis history, Leylah Fernandez. She has won the heart of all New Yorkers, but also the world of tennis. Why? She is an inspiration and an example of talent, humility, carisma and class.
At the age of 19, the Canadian of Ecuadorian descent will play the final of the last Grand Slam of 2021 tennis circuit. She was never among the favorites. Yet, she is now. Fernandez is 19 years old and winning is not new, but never at a professional level. She was world number one and junior Roland Garros champion in 2019. Fernandez wanted to played soccer like her dad; destiny had other plans for this tennis sensation.
Born in Montreal on September 6, 2002, Fernández is the daughter of Ecuadorian Jorge and mother Irene, a Canadian of Filipino descent. His grandparents Óscar and Inés live in Salinas, a coastal city in Ecuador, where she travels whenever she can.
Leylah is fluent in French, Spanish and English and has the flags of Canada, Ecuador and the Philippines on his Instagram account.
