What is ginger tea?

Ginger is an aromatic root that belongs to the same family as cardamom and turmeric. While the leaves can be consumed, the root is what's most popular, and it can be consumed fresh, powdered, dried, and infused in oils or essences.

Ginger is commonly used in ginger or desserts, but it's also a common ingredient for teas. The first records of ginger teas date back to 5,000 years ago, linked to ancient China, where people used it as a health tonic.

How to make ginger tea?

Making ginger tea is incredibly easy, only requiring two ingredients, a stovetop, and a kettle or pot.

Ingredients

  • Fresh ginger
  • Water

Preparation

  1. Boil water in a kettle.
  2. As the water boils, peel the ginger and cut it into pieces. These don't have to be very large.
  3. Once the water reaches a boil, add the ginger and let it cook for around 20 minutes.
  4. Turn off the heat and let the infusion rest for 5 minutes.
  5. You can add some lime or cinnamon for flavor, removing some of the spicy flavor that the root is associated with. After the drink has been served, you can sweeten it with a dash of natural honey.
