As we celebrate Women’s History Month, it’s important that we take time to recognize and celebrate the remarkable achievements of women who have taken risks and broken barriers in the male-dominated Spirits and Alcohol industry. For this reason, we want to introduce you to six exceptional women making waves, pushing boundaries, and demonstrating their expertise and innovation in this field. 

From master blenders and distillers to founders, these women have paved the way for future generations by challenging the status quo and creating a more inclusive and diverse industry. Let’s acknowledge their hard work, dedication, and impact and celebrate their contributions to the spirits industry and beyond.

Lorena Vasquez, Master Blender, Ron Zacapa

Lorena Vasquez, who is an HOLA! Latina Powerhouse is a master blender and the first woman to hold the title of Master Blender of Ron Zacapa, one of the world’s most prestigious rum brands. With over 35 years of experience in the spirits industry, Lorena is responsible for creating the unique flavor profiles of Ron Zacapa’s premium rums, using a blend of rums aged up to 25 years.

She is also passionate about sustainability and has implemented various eco-friendly initiatives in the production process of Ron Zacapa. Through her work, Lorena inspires more women to enter and excel in the spirits industry.

Nicole Young, Frisky Whiskey

Nicole Young is a groundbreaking entrepreneur known for being the first and only Black woman to own a flavored whiskey brand. Her brand, Frisky, is crafted from 100% premium whiskey and uses a breakthrough formula that enhances the naturally occurring whiskey notes with the purest caramel and natural vanilla.

Through her dedication to her craft and commitment to excellence, Nicole’s has earned her brand recognition as the highest-rated flavored whiskey ever, with a taste score of 95 out of 100.

Yola Jimenez, Yola Mezcal

Yola Jimenez is a Mexican-American entrepreneur and co-founder of Yola Mezcal, a sustainable and socially responsible mezcal brand. Yola’s passion for creating a high-quality and eco-friendly mezcal has earned her recognition as a trailblazer in the spirits industry. Yola Mezcal is made using traditional methods and ingredients sourced from her family’s land in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Yola Mezcal also established an annual festival in Los Angeles called YOLA Día, which features women-identifying musicians, artists, chefs, and activists, to promote inclusivity, inspire change, and celebrate the achievements of talented pioneers.

Catalina Bentz, founder of Catan Pisco

In July 2018, Catalina Bentz made history as the first Chilean woman to launch a pisco company with the introduction of Catan Pisco. Not only is Catan Pisco the first female-owned pisco brand in the history of Chile, but it’s also the first American pisco brand. Her brand has quickly gained popularity and featured in publications such as Forbes and Vogue.

Being raised in a traditional Latin household in the USA, Bentz hopes to inspire other Chilean and Latina women in the U.S. or abroad to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams despite the challenges they may face.

Nancy Duarte, Master Distiller, Santa Teresa 1796

Nancy Duarte is the first female Master Distiller at Santa Teresa 1796, one of Venezuela’s oldest and most respected rum producers. With over 14 years of experience in the industry, Nancy has been instrumental in creating some of Santa Teresa’s most innovative and award-winning rums, including the Bodega Privada and the iconic 1796 Solera.

Her passion for rum and dedication to the craft has earned her numerous accolades, including being named one of the “50 most influential women in the world of spirits” by Drinks International. Nancy continues to push the boundaries of what is possible with rum, and her legacy as a trailblazing master distiller is secure.

GG Mirvis - Desolas Mezcal

GG Mirvis, the founder of Desolas Mezcal, is on a mission to revolutionize how people think about mezcal. With over a decade of experience in the agave spirits industry, GG’s premium mezcal brand is designed to honor nature and tradition while offering a fresh, floral, and herbal taste. GG wants to change the perception that mezcal is always smoky, and her brand has been featured in prominent publications such as Forbes and Vogue.

Desolas has also won a Gold Medal at the Global Spirits Design and Packaging Masters and is served at some of the most exclusive hotspots in New York City and Miami.
