Knit and retro: The polos you’ll want to wear this summer

The biggest fashion houses have rejuvenated minimalist polos and turned them into this season’s it piece

It was one of the biggest surprises on the runways of Milan and Paris: polo sweaters. This iconic short-sleeve piece with a traditional collared neck is back for the summer season, this time in exquisite knits including ribbed, wool and ultralight synthetic fabrics, renewing their retro charm without foregoing their hint of sportiness. They’ve already piqued the interest of editors, buyers, and the most famous fashion influencers.

Although they have gone somewhat forgotten in women’s fashion, this staple has risen to the top of this season’s fashion trends, so you’ll want to make sure to have one or two in your closet as soon as possible.

It doesn’t get any more retro

The ‘70s aesthetic is still en vogue, and Prada demonstrated that it is all in with this nostalgic, preppy yet distinctively sexy top that is solid and semi-sheer. The fashion house paired it with sateen and leather midi skirts to create memorable looks.

A sporty elegant hybrid, the polo shirt also captured the attention of in and outsiders on the Missoni runway. Hip-length and made of a blend of colors, this top’s deep V-neck is perfect for the hottest days still to come.

A top with history

The ultimate symbol of femininity, this delicate garment evokes glamorous images of the “New Look” that ruled the ‘50s, a period when it was worn in a set with a matching high-waisted skirt. Resort fashion with its classic prints and vertical lines of buttons, as presented by Miu Miu, certainly couldn’t escape this trend.

Polos in street style

Following the precedent set by Jackie Kennedy and Jane Birkin, Bella Hadid was one of the first modern celebrities to sign onto the fashion trend of making the polo sweater the centerpiece of her outfits. To modernize the look, the top model wore her Fendi crop-top with denim shorts.

Want a knitted polo?

This is definitely the trend that has reached mainstream fashion, but that’s no reason to skip out on it. On the contrary! A design like the Shania Ribbed Polo Top by superdown is so versatile that you can wear it day or night (Revolve, $48).

The chicest sweaters

These knit tops are essentially knitted sweaters with shirt collars. That’s what lends them their edge over—and what differentiates them from—men’s golf shirts. The best example of this is the Ribbed V-neck Polo Knit Top by & Other Stories ($59) in sherbet pink.

Go for contrast

A design like the Polo Sweater from Zara ($35.90) calls for a slightly more voluminous piece on the bottom. Dare to pair it with a tropical patterned skirt to jazz it up and balance out the piece’s tailored fit.

Colorful knit sweaters

Although neutral colors are timeless, there is nothing like adding a dash of bright color to be in perfect harmony with the spring. The blue in the Contrast-Striped Knit Polo Shirt by Stella Jean is just one of many designs to consider. A pair of flare jeans or Bermuda shorts will do the rest (Matches Fashion, $125).

Low-profile pieces don’t have to be boring, and polo sweaters are sure to become a staple you can use to prove it while also keeping up with the latest trends!
