Selena Gomez’s 7 style rules to follow for fashion success

Get some major wardrobe inspo from the singer-actress

UPDATED MARCH 28, 2020 9:13 AM EDT

Selena Gomez’s  style game is becoming a greater source of inspiration by the day. Her influence in the world of style has come a long way since her days at Disney and her penchant for princess dresses. With the launch of sixth album Rare, we are seeing a whole new side to the sultry star.

The Lose You to Love Me star isn’t afraid to match different fabrics, colors, and prints, and she also doesn’t shy away from combining multiple fashion trends into a single outfit, ften giving a sneak preview of what will eventually be on the fashion week runways. The Texas-born singer has a few lessons to show us about how a few carefully selected items can be put together to create a five-star outfit. Take a look at these seven things we have learned from her.

1. Mix fabrics, prints and styles

Selena knows how to mix by looking for the perfect balance and juxtaposition of the pieces she uses. That way, you can pick pieces that combine perfectly, despite being different.

Just take a look at how she plays with the two prints in this dress by Rixo that at first glance don’t seem like they would go well together. But they have a common theme: the red in the motifs and the black base. The distribution of each piece also plays a part, the louder piece on top and the more discreet piece below help favor her figure.

2) Elevate basic pieces

Here, the singer went with a look that works spectacularly day or night. The key is to combine a basic piece, like that black Leset top, with another versatile piece that stands out from the rest.

To do this, she used a pencil skirt from the brand Miu Miu with a gathered waist that highlighted her curves. And the final touch? Accessories and shoes that have enough visual weight to add a bit of complexity to the look; like a mini metal purse, stilletos with clear details and eye-catching hoop earrings.

3. Choose simple, monochromatic looks for maximum impact

Aside from all black outfits, Selena is a fan of choosing other colors too, wearing them from head to toe and complementing her skin tone delightfully. She teaches us that it's a good idea to choose color schemes that can work as neutral and are a bold style statement in themselves, like this burnt orange one.

4. Pay attention to the finer details

The pop star gets her outfits to look spectacular by paying attention to the finer details. So the fourth lesson is to carefully select some pieces that will make the ensemble unique.

On this occasion, she decided on a classic houndstooth print suit and a black top that are given a modern twist with black-and-white mules by Proenza Schouler and the perfect combination of red lips, nails, and the edge of her black bag. In short, the devil is in the detail.

5. Take a chance with original pieces

The Come & Get It singer loves to wear designs that make her look and feel great. She also doesn’t mind experimenting like she did with this short dress which has two of the trends most seen on runways and frequently worn by trendsetters: feathers and statement sleeves.

6) Embrace your shape

Selena knows how to dress for her figure and she often opts for pieces that accentuate it to the max. So, the first thing to do is understand your body type, get familiar with your features, accept them, and make the most out of them with pieces that powerfully highlight your assets and are the right fit.

7. Pick a single focal point in your makeup

While she can go bold with the best of them – we love it when she does a classic red lip – Selena often prefers natural makeup with the focus on slightly smokey eyes and nude tones on her lips. Less is always more.
