It has been a dramatic awards season with Karla Sofia Gascón and Emilia Perez at the center. With the actress noticeably missing from awards shows, including the Critics Choice, SAG Awards, and this weekend's Oscars as the final stop, the big question is: will she be there?
The Spaniard is up for Best Actress in the film, which is leading the pack with 13 nods. Following her viral and controversial tweets, it was reported earlier this month that Netflix was distancing itself from the 52-year-old actor and removed her from promotional emails.
The Hollywood Reporter stated that they were going to stop covering Gascón’s travel fees to promote the film or her styling for appearances at these events. However, it seems like things have changed. According to Variety, not only will Gascón attend the Oscars, but sources told the outlet Netflix will be funding it.
The Oscars are the biggest event in Hollywood, and the ceremony will take place on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. However, many questions remain about her appearance, including whether she will walk the carpet, take interviews, or join her co-stars Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez, and director Jacques Audiard. Since the controversy, they have all distanced themselves from Gascón.
What they've said since the controversy
Selena Gomez
At the 2025 Santa Barbara Film Festival on February 9, Gomez addressed the controversy, saying, "Some of the magic has disappeared, but I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just, I’m just grateful and live with no regrets."
Zoe Saldaña
Saldaña weighed in during a Q&A session in London, saying, “It makes me really sad because I don’t support and I don’t have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group. I can only attest to the experience that I had with each and every individual who was a part of this film, and my experience and my interactions with them were about inclusivity and collaboration and racial, cultural, and gender equity. And it just saddens me.”
Jacques Audiard
In an interview with Deadline, Audiard said they stopped communication, “I haven’t spoken to her, and I don’t want to. She is in a self-destructive approach that I can’t interfere in, and I really don’t understand why she’s continuing."
"Why is she harming herself? Why? I don’t understand it, and what I don’t understand about this too is why she’s harming people who were very close to her. I’m thinking in this thing of how hurting others, of how she’s hurting the crew and all these people who worked so incredibly hard on this film. I’m thinking of myself, I’m thinking of Zoe [Saldaña] and Selena [Gomez]. I just don’t understand why she’s continuing to harm us," he continued.
Karla Sofia Gascón
As for Gascón, she said in a statement to Variety, “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt. As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness."
The artist also wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, "I only seek the freedom to exist without fear, to create art without barriers, and to move forward with my new life." She added, "They want to subject me to 'cancel culture.' I am asking Hollywood experts, and to journalists who know me and know my trajectory. How to move forward?"
