"How to Train Your Dragon" is getting the live-action treatment. The movie, which will be released in the coming year, is based on the successful animated films exploring the adventures of Hiccup and Toothless, a young Viking and his dragon. The film is being adapted by the same team behind the animated films, and a cast rounded out by Mason Thames, Nico Parker, and Gerard Butler

Universal Studios released the film's first teaser trailer today, providing a first look at the characters of Hiccup, Toothless, and Stoick. The teaser features Hiccup, a young Viking who doesn't feel comfortable slaying a dragon, a necessary part of his Viking training.

While out on a mission to slay a dragon, Hiccup meets Toothless, with the two becoming fast friends. The teaser depicts the moment of their meeting, faithfully adapting the animated film into live action.

More details about the film

Nico Parker shared the film's poster and trailer on her social media, revealing that it would be premiering on June 13th, 2025. She plays the role of Astrid, Hiccup's love interest and the perfect Viking, at least at the start of the film.

In March, Parker was featured at the BAFTA Awards, where she discussed the process of shooting the film. "I've got a few days left, and then I'm free from the dragon training," she said. "It's been so fun. So, so brilliant. Quite cold. We're filming in Belfast... It's been amazing."

"How to Train Your Dragon" is being written and directed by Dean DeBlois, who also wrote and directed the original trilogy, which kicked off in 2010. Sequels followed in 2014 and 2019. They were nominated for numerous awards, including four Oscars.

The animated films are based on a series of twelve children's novels written by Cressida Cowell. They have grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide.
