Latinos are making history at this year’s Emmy Awards. While the number of nominees remains drastically small, Jenna Ortega and Pedro Pascal are making history in their respective categories.
Ortega becomes the third Latina to be nominated as a lead actress in the awards show, following Rita Moreno for her work in “9 to 5” and America Ferrera for “Ugly Betty.” Pedro Pascal becomes the first actor since 1999 to be nominated as a lead actor, when Jimmy Smits earned his nomination for his work in the show “NYPD Blue.”

Despite Ortega and Pascal’s exciting recognition, the number of Latino nominees remains low in award shows. Last year, only two Latinos were nominated for Emmys: Oscar Isaac for “Scenes of a Marriage” and Colman Domingo for “Euphoria.”

Jenna Ortega
Jenna Ortega was nominated for best actress in a comedy series for her work in “Wednesday.” The project has proved to be immensely successful, not only amassing views and fan engagement, but also providing Ortega with her first nominations for awards like the Golden Globes and the Emmys.
Pedro Pascal
Pedro Pascal was nominated as best actor for a drama series for his work in “The Last of Us.” This is his first major nomination.
Camila Morrone
Camila Morrone was nominated for best supporting actress in a limited series “Daisy Jones and the Six.” She plays the lead actor’s girlfriend and is the main obstacle in the lead couple’s romance, adding shades to a role that could have been rendered forgettable in the hands of a less interesting actress.
Aubrey Plaza
was nominated for best actress in a drama series for “White Lotus.” Plaza quickly became one of the main draws of the series, playing her role with her signature wit and humor.
