Spencer, the biopic about the late Princess Diana, is in its final stretch, and ahead of its premiere, the film’s producer has shared a new image of Kristen Stewart in her role as the Princess of Wales.
The photo shows Stewart dressed in a plaid jacket, loose turtle neck ivory top, oversized pearl earrings, and a replica of the iconic sapphire and diamond engagement ring Princess Diana used to wear. It now belongs to Kate Middleton, wife of Diana’s oldest son Prince William.
In the image, the 30-year-old actress is wearing minimal make and Princess Diana’s layered short hairdo.
The film is expected to launch in fall 2021. “Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life,” said Stewart. “It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name; Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.”
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Stewart revealed she didn’t understand what was happening in 1997 when Diana tragically died. “I was really young, [I] didn‘t know what was going on,” the actress said. ”It’s hard not to feel protective of her. She was so young.”
“I mean, everyone’s perspective is different, and there’s no way to get anything right because what is fact in relation to personal experience,” she continued. “My movie takes place over three days, and it’s this really poetic internal imagining of what that might have felt like rather than giving new information,” Stewart said. “We kind of don’t have a mark to hit; we just also love her.”
Directed and produced by Pablo Larraín, Spencer is set in 1991 when Princess Diana decides to leave Prince Charles after spending the Christmas holiday with the royal family at Sandringham House.
