Princess Diana continues to give us more to talk about decades after her death. A new biography explores new sides of Diana's life, including her friendship with the late rockstar and Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.
The excerpt is from the biography "Dianaworld: An Obsession," which compiles stories and anecdotes from various sources that focus on sides of Diana that are not commonly known by the general public.
Published by PEOPLE, the excerpt reveals that Diana enjoyed various secret nightscapades, something that she shared with her closest and most trusted friends.
One of these stories includes a trip to one of London's most famous gay bars, where Diana was accompanied by Mercury and some friends. The story allegedly took place in the '80s and was recounted by the actress Cleo Rocos.

"At some point in the evening, Rocos claims, Diana persuaded them to take her to the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, a place that Everett warned was 'not for you ... full of hairy gay men.' Diana was insistent, however, so Everett helped her disguise herself in male drag: 'a camouflage army jacket, hair tucked up into a leather cap and dark aviator sunglasses. Scrutinizing her in the half-light we decided that the most famous icon of the modern world might just ... JUST, pass for a rather eccentrically dressed gay male model,'" reads the excerpt.
“It was fabulously outrageous and so bizarrely exciting... no one, absolutely no one, recognized Diana.”
According to Rocos' statement, the group stayed for one drink, with Diana returning home to Kensington Palace.
While some sources have discredited the story due to its fantastic nature and Mercury's former assistant said that the rock icon and Diana had never met, it's a story that has taken a life of its own. It was the source of inspiration for the musical "Royal Vauxhall," and cemented Diana's status as a gay icon.
