When a massive blackout swept across Spain on Monday, April 28, it threw the whole country into chaos; millions were left without power for hours. Madrid was hit especially hard, halting daily life and essential services. As the city scrambled to figure out what was happening, celebrities shared how they weathered the crisis on social media. Among them was Sofia Vergara, who’d just arrived in the capital for a string of professional commitments.

Just hours earlier, the ‘Modern Family’ actress dazzled at the Platino Awards gala in Madrid’s IFEMA Palacio Municipal, where she surprised her friend Eva Longoria during the honorary award presentation. For Monday, Vergara had planned an over-the-top launch event for her beauty line, Toty, on Monday, and she was beyond excited. But fate had other plans

When the lights went out, Sofia was lunching on the rooftop terrace of the Four Seasons Hotel Madrid with her son Manolo, her niece Claudia Vergara, and a few close friends. No one expected to be stuck up there for what turned out to be eight and a half hours. Once the lights flickered back on, the Modern Family star took to Instagram to share her experience.

“Weirdest day in Madrid🤷🏻‍♀️ 8 1/2 hours of a blackout stuck in a terrace but with my favorite people. Sadly we had to cancel the beautiful @totyeurope event we had prepared at the amazing @fsmadrid for all the press and influencers 😒but I will be back soon!!! And happy to have spend time with the @totyeurope team of beautiful girls and the BOSS @juanmatji I ❤️ Madrid!” Along this caption, sunny photos of them enjoying the weather on the hotel’s terrace. Laid out on the table were her go-to treats: jamón serrano, assorted appetizers, fresh fruit salad—and, of course, a pitcher of sangría.

The outage threw Madrid into chaos: public transport ground to a halt, traffic jams snaked through the streets, and bewildered residents struggled to get updates. Through it all, Sofia kept her spirits high and even managed some on-the-spot branding.

“8 hours in the Madrid sun, but fully protected because I had my @totyeurope in my bag,” she shared, posing with her favorite skincare essentials.

Despite the unexpected delay, Vergara promised she’d return soon to reunite with her fans and, perhaps, to finally get that rooftop party back on track. “You’re so beautiful, Madrid,” she concluded.
