Monday marked the 147th White House Easter Egg Roll—a tradition that began in 1878 with President Rutherford B. Hayes. Activities at the event on April 21 included A Be Best military card writing station, Be Best hopscotch and reading nook, where the first lady and other readers read to children.

Before joining in on the festivities, President Donald Trump praised his wife for her hard work on the 2025 Easter Egg Roll. "I just want to give a special thank you to our great first lady, who organized this entire event," the president said. "She worked very, very hard on it. She worked very hard. I said, 'What are you doing?' She said, 'I'm working on the Egg Roll." I said, 'That sounds like a lot of fun,' and we're going to have a lot of fun in just a couple of minutes."

US First Lady Melania Trump high fives a young girl as she watches children play a game during the annual Easter Egg Roll on the South Lawn of the White House on April 21, 2025, in Washington, DC. According to the US National Park Service, the egg roll tradition dates back to 1878 when President Rutherford B. Hayes invited children to roll Easter eggs on the White House grounds. Children previously rolled eggs down a hill at the US Capitol in the early 1870s, but a law was passed in 1876 forbidding the Capitol property from being used due to the toll on the lawn. On social media, the first lady wrote that Monday's event "was filled with family, joy, and tradition - a beautiful reminder that when we come together with open hearts, love and harmony truly shine," adding, "The White House’s South Lawn came to life and created cherished memories which will last for generations."
