Matthew McConaughey is one of the most verbose actors working in Hollywood. He's shared his memories and experiences in the best-selling book "Greenlights," where he's shed light on his life, his children, his wife, and his parents. McConaughey gives his readers an unvarnished look at his family's life, including the complicated relationship he had with his parents Kay and Jim McConaughey.
Kay, 93, has recently revealed why she decided to marry and divorce McConaughey's father on three separate occasions. In an interview with Austin Lifestyle, Kay revealed that she was the one who initially proposed to McConaughey's dad.
“Jim McConaughey couldn't make up his mind whether he wanted to get married or not," she said.
Kay revealed that while she and Jim had known each other since college and were in love, there was still no commitment from him. She decided to give him an ultimatum. “So, I sent him an invitation to his wedding and I said if you can make it, fine, but if you don't show up at the altar, then it's over and I’m going to New York,” she said.
Jim showed up and the two got married, continuing their love story.
She explained that the relationship was complicated, which is why they got married and divorced three times. “I had three traditional real weddings, once in the Presbyterian church, once in the Catholic church, and once in the Methodist church,” she said.
Kay found love again but she never remarried
Jim died in 1992 and Kay found love again with a man named C.J. The two were together for 17 years, until he died of leukemia. Still, she never married again after Jim.
“I never wanted to. I was just so happy to have two men in my life that I really, really loved.”
