With her eyes fixed on the camera and an air of confidence, the First Lady, Melania Trump, stands at the threshold of another four years in the White House. Her official black-and-white portrait is more than just an image—it is a statement. Bold and modern, it captures a woman who has not only embraced her role but redefined it with grace and purpose.
As her husband, Donald Trump, embarks on his second term as President, she enters a new chapter—one that is distinctly her own. Previously recognized for her reserved nature, the New York Times bestselling author now reveals a subtle yet significant transformation. No longer just contemplative, she is determined. She embraces the challenges and responsibilities ahead—radiating confidence, wielding influence, and crafting her own legacy.
After years devoted to her family, Melania is stepping into a new phase focused on meaning, opportunity, and independence. With Barron Trump now in college, the familiar routines of school drop-offs and structured days are shifting, giving her the flexibility to chart her own course. Equipped with the wisdom she has gained along the way, she is ready to shape a future defined not just by her past but by the goals that lie ahead.
In her first magazine feature cover in 16 years, we go behind the scenes of the First Lady’s new era with her closest collaborators—official photographer Régine Mahaux (whose exclusive images appear in ¡HOLA!), stylist and designer Hervé Pierre, and interior designer Tham Kannalikham. Together, they offer insight into the woman beyond the spotlight. Those who have witnessed her transformation describe her as a master of balancing discretion and authority, projecting strength and confidence in her public image.
The Mother-Son Connection
Hours before the presidential inauguration, the Trump family prepared for a long day filled with anticipation. They spent the night at Blair House, the historic residence for official U.S. guests, often regarded as the world’s most exclusive hotel. Ready for a new beginning, they shared a private exchange—one that would become part of history.
Descending the stairs, a radiant First Lady walks with confidence. Poised and impeccably styled, Melania prepares to step back into public life. Behind her stands Barron, the youngest of President Trump’s children. Together, they form a remarkable duo, their deep bond and mutual admiration is evident in every step. “I like this picture because nobody, nobody is there at Blair House. There aren’t any other photographers (I’m the only one). The fact that we could catch Barron and her together, they are a team, they are a good team and that's what I wanted to show you in all my pictures is the affection they have for each other,” Régine explains.
Those very stairs, which once marked the beginning of countless journeys, now symbolize another pivotal moment in Melania’s life. Her path—defined by immense responsibilities—once again intersects with history. Aware of the sacrifices ahead, she steps forward with determination, fully prepared to embrace her role once more.
Seated together, Barron and Melania share a connection that goes beyond words. “Barron is happy and proud and she's really proud of him. The connection there is very, very special. It's a moment that I'm so happy I got, because this is really them. That's what I wanted in my pictures. I’m not a reporter. I'm not a press person,” Régine reflects.
Melania Trump: Crafting a Timeless Fashion Legacy
As we speak with Régine, her eloquence in describing her photos is palpable. This particular image highlights the exact moment when Hervé adds the final haute couture touches to the First Lady’s gown. “I think it was important for us to capture that, to capture all the details, the final touch of the high-end couture. He cares and it has to be perfect. She's going to be in front of the whole world and she wants to set an example and there is the last minute detail,” Régine comments.
Meanwhile, the Trump family had officially settled into the White House, and prepared for a night of inaugural balls in Washington, D.C. For the first time, they stood in the place they will call home for the next four years. “I think they spent about an hour and a half, maybe two at most; then it was a rush from one location to another,” recalls Régine.
Fashion is a world in which the First Lady moves effortlessly. From an early age, she was immersed in the world of style, influenced by her mother, Amalija Knavs, a renowned artist, patternmaker, and tailor in Slovenia. In her memoir, Melania describes her mother as the "epitome of elegance." This early exposure shaped her aesthetic sensibility and helped cultivate a personal style that blends heritage with a modern vision of fashion.
Hervé reflects on the First Lady’s deep appreciation for craftsmanship and attention to detail in fashion. “Mrs. Trump has a great respect for the art of making beautiful dresses; she knows it takes time to accomplish and make a dress… She will never ask to do something in a rush because she knows how much time it takes ... A lot of women still think that I put some fabric in a microwave and in two minutes a dress is made and ready to be delivered! Well, it's not true!,” he says with a laugh, highlighting the commitment needed in haute couture.
Throughout her childhood and modeling career, Melania experienced fashion from multiple angles. One of her fondest memories was when she was six years old and attended a runway show with her sister, Ines. Their mother invited her daughters to the show to model her latest designs. That moment ignited a passion that would ultimately lead Melania to the world’s most prestigious runways.
Since her first day as First Lady, her fashion choices have been a constant subject of public discussion. Her ability to select outfits that not only reflect her personal style but also spark conversation has cemented her influence in contemporary fashion. “She is not 16 years old, looking at a movie star or a pop singer on her bedroom wall to be inspired. She owns her own style! It is obvious when you look at her... I am always fascinated by women who need to get another woman in mind to validate their style because it is an instant and predicted lost battle.”
The way public figures use fashion is constantly analyzed and interpreted. However, Hervé takes a more relaxed, pragmatic approach. “Now ... for the message she tries to send ...! There is none ...! I am fully aware that lately, it is trending to analyze everything, to look at everything under the microscope!", he exclaims.
His comment addresses the current trend of attributing hidden meanings to every outfit, especially concerning public figures like Melania, whose appearance is closely examined. The stylist argues that fashion does not necessarily have to serve as a medium for coded messages or political statements. “It’s exhausting. I know bloggers and so-called fashion experts are busy looking for stories, but I’m not!,” he states, emphasizing that his focus is entirely on aesthetics. If an outfit fits well and is visually appealing, his job is complete.
The Woman Beyond the Spotlight
The First Lady has mastered the art of balancing multiple roles: a devoted mother focused on Barron’s well-being and education, a steadfast wife offering unwavering support to her husband, and a dedicated professional maintaining a successful career while managing her family and social responsibilities. “She is intelligent, courageous, and takes each role seriously. She is humble, sensible, steady, and incredibly professional,” says Régine.
Melania and Donald, who recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary, continue to share a strong and enduring bond, according to her collaborators. The couple publicly celebrated this milestone with affectionate messages and a special picture on social media. “There is something in her—the strong woman—but at the same time, there is a soft power. She's really good at balancing her husband,” Régine adds.
“I have immense respect for her. The way she cares for Viktor, her father, and Barron—who is an amazing, strong young boy and has been through so much—is truly admirable.” The Belgian artist also emphasizes Melania’s deep commitment to her family and the warm, welcoming environment she creates.
The First Lady is no stranger to long workdays. She wakes up at 6 a.m., ready to start by 6:30 a.m., often working until midnight or even later. Régine recalls how, on Inauguration Day, Melania climbed more than 39 flights of stairs and walked approximately nine miles—all while wearing towering heels—without a single complaint. “She was on her feet from six in the morning until two the next day, yet she still looked flawless,” Régine says.
“In addition, she genuinely cares about her team in the East Wing. Her chief of staff, Hayley D’Antuono, and her assistant, Casey Finzer, provide incredible support. It’s wonderful to have such dedicated people around her. She also prioritizes mentoring young professionals, helping to shape and educate the next generation.”
One of Régine’s most iconic photographs of Melania captures her standing in front of Trump Force One. “They were going to a rally. I love it. It's iconic to me. I thought it was important to have the plane because that was a really big part of the campaign and she's just there like an icon. There is a secret part of her, and everything there is perfection. She’s also on the phone, constantly handling tasks, making sure everything gets done, and ensuring everyone has what they need. And the picture was, I don't know, I loved it!”
Tham describes her as a thoughtful and intelligent woman in her work. “Mrs. Trump has always exuded pride in her beliefs and unwavering confidence when speaking about topics she knows deeply or has thoroughly researched. As an inquisitive and thoughtful individual, she values listening and learning from others when a subject or history is unfamiliar to her.” She adds, “She understands the power of listening—an often overlooked but critical trait of strong leadership. While some may have underestimated her confidence at the time, it was always present, grounded in her sense of self and purpose.”
Melania is always mindful of the elegant image she wishes to project, even outside of official duties. “She always dresses impeccably, even in private. Her signature look is usually a pair of fitted trousers and a crisp white shirt,” says Hervé. “You won’t catch her in gym clothes—except when she’s actually working out.”
Making the White House a Home
The official move-in occured on Inauguration Day, with the outgoing president’s furniture, belongings, and décor replaced within hours. During her first stay in the White House, Melania and Tham worked closely to leave their mark, undertaking a series of renovations throughout the president’s first term. Their efforts focused on preserving the historical integrity of the residence while enhancing its elegance and functionality.
In 2019, Tham joined the Committee for the Preservation of the White House, further cementing her influence in preserving this historic residence. When she looks back on her collaboration with the First Lady, she opens up about their mutual vision for design and how essential it is to respect tradition while also welcoming modern touches.
In her memoir, Melania describes her mother’s refined taste and the vibrant atmosphere of her childhood home in Slovenia. Raised in an environment that valued fashion, art, and design, she developed an aesthetic sensibility from an early age—one that shaped her identity and deepened her passion for architecture and interior design. Since moving to the White House, she has put her personal stamp on every detail, focusing on sophistication and visual harmony.
With over 130 rooms, the White House requires not only daily upkeep but also ongoing renovations. “She recognized that the White House is more than a residence—it is the people’s house, a symbol of strength, opportunity, and everything America represents. Its design should honor the architecture with dignity and purpose, ensuring it reflects the nation’s enduring greatness.”
Ultimately, “Mrs. Trump approaches every decision with intention and purpose. As we plan projects for the next four years, this same mindset will guide our work, ensuring each effort carries significance. It’s not about decorating for the sake of it, but about creating designs that stand the test of time. With a foundation of timeless design already in place, there’s little need to alter spaces that are already beautiful and perfectly suited to their purpose.”
Tham concludes by expressing her deep respect for Melania’s vision and dedication to preserving the legacy of the iconic residence.
