Monica Barbaro is a first-time Academy Award nominee. The San Francisco native stars in "A Complete Unknown," her most notorious role to date, starring opposite fellow Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet and taking on the role of folk legend Joan Baez. The Academy Award nominations were announced yesterday, with Barbaro being one of the best surprises of the occasion, nominated for best supporting actress alongside Ariana Grande for "Wicked," Isabella Rossellini for "Conclave," Felicity Jones for "The Brutalist," and Zoe Saldaña for "Emilia Perez."
Barbaro was shocked by the nomination. “It’s beyond comprehension at this point in my career,” she said to Vulture.
She discussed this year's female performers and how hopeful it is for her as she looks forward to her career and the film industry in Hollywood.
"This year is stacked with excellent female performances. It gives me so much hope for women in film. To have my name among the final five is something I can’t even wrap my head around yet."
In a separate interview with Deadline, she revealed that she was in touch with her cast and crew members of "A Complete Unknown," with all of them leaning on each other through this time.
"Jim and I have texted back and forth, and I immediately texted the four of us," she said of James Mangold, the film's director, and her co-stars Chalamet and Edward Norton, who were all nominated.
"We were just in Rome and Paris and London together, so I just texted that group chat quickly.”
