Madonna is getting emotional while celebrating her daughter Marcy James's 19th birthday. The iconic singer looked back on her childhood memories and the moment she first met Mercy as a baby in Malawi. The musician is known for spending quality time with her family and is always prioritizing her kids, and traveling around the world with them.
"Happy Birthday Chifundo-AKA-Mercy James! You are such a special soul," Madonna wrote on Instagram Stories, detailing the story of how she first met her daughter, who was struggling with her health at the time. "When I met you, you were a tiny baby, underneath a mosquito net in an orphanage in Malawi. You were very sick with Malaria but you pulled through."
"I whispered in your ear that I would do my best to give you a home as soon as possible," Madonna wrote about the adoption process, which lasted years before Mercy arrived at her new home with the singer.
"4 1/2 years later after battling with the Supreme Court in Malawi because they did not allow divorced women to adopt children. You came to live with us. You arrived with your hand in your mouth silent and refusing to speak," Madonna continued. "Who knew that you would grow up to be the kindest person with the biggest heart and the most infectious laugh."
Madonna also praised Mercy's artistry and shared the love and appreciation she has for her daughter, as the pair continue to share a special bond. "A talented musician- an accomplished photographer and honestly, the most sensible of all my children," she concluded.
"You are the one that everyone goes to for advice, or a shoulder to cry on. You hold a special place in the hearts of everyone that knows you. Especially me."
