Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th President of the United States had its share of memorable moments, but one lighthearted exchange between Trump and First Lady Melania Trump stole the spotlight. Upon arriving at Capitol Hill, Trump leaned in for what appeared to be an affectionate kiss on the cheek, but the moment took an unexpectedly humorous and awkward turn.
As the President leaned in, Melania smiled and moved closer, but the wide-brimmed hat she chose as part of her outfit blocked his attempt. The result? A “no kiss,” as social media quickly dubbed the now-viral moment.
The couple exchanged an air kiss instead, fulfilling Trump’s tender gesture toward his wife, who stood by his side for his second journey to the White House. With composure, the President greeted former President Joe Biden before continuing the inaugural proceedings. These events included his official oath of office, marking the start of his new term as President, witnessed by prominent figures from politics and business, such as Javier Milei, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Tim Cook.
Later, after delivering his first speech as the 47th president, Trump returned to Melania and, this time, successfully dodged the hat to kiss her cheek.
Melania Trump’s elegant ensemble
Smiling throughout the day, Melania Trump attended the inauguration with the same grace she displayed at the pre-inauguration events. For the ceremony, the 54-year-old First Lady chose a look designed by Adam Lippes: a navy blue double-breasted coat paired with a matching wide-brimmed hat by Eric Javits. She completed her ensemble with black gloves and navy pumps. Beneath the hat, her hair was styled in an elegant bun.
While her outfit turned heads, Melania’s face was partially obscured by her statement hat. However, her warm smile and gracious demeanor shone through as she greeted friends and acquaintances before the oath-taking ceremony.
