Will Smith is sharing some interesting videos. Earlier today, the Academy Award-winning actor shared a video on his social media that has many wondering if he'll be involved in "The Matrix" franchise, one of the world's most beloved pieces of pop culture entertainment.
The clip is a black screen, with some text in red appearing over it, reminiscent of an '80s and '90s style computer. The sound is made up of static. "In 1997, the Wachowskis offered Will Smith the role of Neo in The Matrix," it reads.
"Smith turned it down. He chose Wild Wild West, believing it was a better fit for him at the time. But the question remains: What would The Matrix have been like with Will Smith as Neo?"
"Wake up, Will... The Matrix has you." concludes the video.
The video has excited some of his fans, who are interested in learning more about the post. Smith has discussed his experience with "The Matrix" in the past, sharing that he met up with the Wachowskis, who pitched him the film and left him unimpressed. "As it turns out they’re geniuses," said Smith in a video essay shared in 2019.
“If I had done it, because I’m Black, then Morpheus wouldn’t have been Black because they were looking at Val Kilmer. I was going to be Neo and Val Kilmer was going to be Morpheus,” he continued. "I probably would’ve messed The Matrix up, I would’ve ruined it. So I did y’all a favor," he said humorously.
So, is Will Smith involved in a The Matrix reboot?
Sadly, it appears Smith won't be involved in a Matrix reboot. PEOPLE reported that Smith is not involved in the planned reboot of The Matrix, which was announced last year and is being written and directed by Drew Goddard.
It's unknown what Smith will be doing in connection to "The Matrix," with some speculating that the clip might be related to his upcoming record, which he's been teasing in recent months and marks his return to music in 20 years. It could also be a Super Bowl ad.
We'll have to wait and see what will happen.
