Puerto Rican actor Osvaldo Ríos, known for his starring roles in hit telenovelas like "La Viuda de Blanco," opened up about a defining chapter of his life: his relationship with Colombian superstar Shakira. As a special guest on the podcast "Cara a Cara con Rodner Figueroa," the actor shared heartfelt details about their romance, which spanned nearly a year when he was 36 and she was just 20.

Although Osvaldo rarely speaks about their time together, he couldn't avoid the topic during the candid conversation. Reflecting on their relationship, he described it as one of the most unique experiences of his life, as it was centered not on physical attraction but on an emotional and spiritual connection.

"There are things in life that are unforgettable," he said. "It was a relationship that brought a lot of learning to my life. I realized I could have a partner and experience a connection that wasn't tied to the physical aspect but rather the emotional one—and enjoy it just as much."

A Relationship Rooted in Spirituality

Ríos shared that their romance took them to enchanting places, including Paris, Brazil, and his home in Puerto Rico, often accompanied by Shakira's brother, Tonino, due to her family's traditional Lebanese roots. "It was very proper and respectful," Osvaldo recounted. "My relationship with her was very spiritual because she was very devoted to the Virgin Mary."

Love Letters Turned into Songs

Their bond also flourished through artistic expression. They wrote love letters to each other, which Osvaldo revealed inspired several of Shakira's early songs, including "Tú," "Moscas en la casa," and "Solo tú." The actor also expressed his feelings for Shakira in a book of poetry.

A Love That Had to Let Go

Despite their deep connection, their respective careers ultimately pulled them in different directions. Ríos acknowledged that, while they dreamed of marriage, he recognized Shakira's extraordinary potential and encouraged her to pursue her path without limitations.

"We wanted to get married and everything, but I thought it wasn't the wisest decision because I saw what was coming. I said, 'This bird has to fly very high,'" he admitted, hinting at the global stardom that awaited Shakira.

Though their love story ended decades ago, Osvaldo Ríos holds their time together close to his heart. He credits Shakira with teaching him a new perspective on love.

Decades later

Around 26 years have passed since their romance, and Shakira is again dealing with heartbreak after ending her relationship with the father of her two sons.

The star, who has poured her heart out in hit songs, shared unknown details of who was there for her when she was going through her highly publicized split from Gerard Piqué. During a 2024 Rolling Stone cover story, Shakira explained that Chris Martin, from Coldplay, was there for her after her controversial 2022 separation. "He was there for me when I got separated and was heartbroken,” the musician said, following the scandal and media attention during her breakup.

He was checking in every day to see how I was doing, sending me words of support and strength and wisdom," Shakira added. She also praised him for his friendship and empathy. "I see him as a person who sees life through a different lens, who’s sensitive to other people’s needs and very empathetic, very empathetic," she said to the publication.
