In the latest public service announcement from PETA Latino, Mexican actress Kate del Castillo is seen with her hair twisted into horns and steam blowing out of her nose, demanding an end to bullfighting in Guadalajara’s Plaza Nuevo Progreso. Why is this issue so important to her, and why should it matter to us?

The 50-year-old actress believes that bullfighting is a cruel and outdated practice that has no place in modern society.

In a recent interview, she said:

“The idea of torturing and killing an animal for entertainment just doesn’t make sense to me.”

The star is not alone in that sentiment, many people worldwide are beginning to question the ethics of bullfighting and are calling for an end to the controversial tradition. Already, the Instagram post shared by “La Reina del Sur” is making waves with over 200K likes and over 10k comments.

The campaign features Kate in a video narrating a bullfight from the animal’s viewpoint. She shares the painful experience of the bull and poses the questions, “What have I done to deserve this?” and asks why people find pleasure in watching the animal being tortured, mutilated, and ultimately killed.

She ends the video with a bold and powerful message:

“Bullfighting is torture, not culture.”

So why do some people still find bullfighting entertaining? According to del Castillo, it’s due to cultural heritage and nostalgia. She commented:

“I understand that bullfighting is a deeply ingrained part of their culture and history for some people. Just because something is traditional doesn’t mean it’s right. We have to be willing to evolve and grow as a society.”

The campaign aimed to raise awareness about the issue and included printed advertisements on buses that pass through the bullfighting plaza. The message of the campaign was a clear rejection of the relocation of bullfighting to Guadalajara following a judge’s indefinite ban on bullfighting in Mexico City.

The public service announcement will run through April 14th on buses operating on Route 622, which passes right through Plaza Nuevo Progreso.
