These women aren’t afraid of a little confrontation

The Johnny Depp V. Amber Heard defamation saga is coming to an end. On Friday, lawyers on both sides presented their closing arguments to the jury, who will deliberate after a 6-week dramatic trial that has captivated the world. Many viral moments have come from the case, and Johnny Depp’s lawyers have turned into mini-celebrities. Regardless of what happens, there is no denying the brainpower and skill it took to be a part of the high-profile case. Women were first admitted to the Law Society in 1922, and Depp’s team at Brown Rudnick firm had 5 impressive women working the case. Learn a little bit about each of them below.

Camille Vasquez

Camille Vasquez has captivated the world with her fearless and powerful presence. She went viral several times, including her cross-examination of Amber Heard. The Latina has inspired women with similar aspirations, and she is undoubtedly a celebrity in the making. Per BBC, Vasquez was born in San Francisco to Cuban and Colombian parents. She is a 2006 graduate of the University of Southern California, and she graduated from Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles in 2010. She specializes in litigation and arbitration, with a focus on representing plaintiffs in defamation cases. People were shocked to learn she was just an associate at Brown Rudnick law firm, and many are hoping that she becomes a partner or starts her own practice.

Yarelyn Mena

Another fierce Latina, Yarelyn Mena, joined the Brown Rudnick LLP in October 2019. She earned her BA from Hunter College in Psychology in 2015, before graduation from Fordham University School of Law in 2019. When she was a law student, she was one of twenty-five law students in the country selected to participate in the Hispanic National Bar. She specializes in intellectual property and commercial law, and in September 2020, she was chosen to participate in the Hispanic Bar Association’s Latina Leadership Academy with women in the legal profession from around the nation.

Stephanie Calnan

Stephanie Calnan graduated from Boston University School of Law and had her viral moment after she cross-examined Dr. Richard Shaw. Following questioning, the young lawyer returned to her seat with a proud smile, and Depp was seen congratulating her. According to the Brown Rudnick bio, she joined the firm in 2016. The law associate has been working with Ben Chew and is also a member of the Sports & Entertainment litigation team of Brown Rudnick. She is also a member of the firm’s ‘Women’s Initiative Steering Committee’ and participates in the humanitarian event ‘Lawyers Have Heart 5k,” per Meaww.

Jessica Meyers

Jessica Meyers is a partner of Brown Rudnick and is a business litigator and trial attorney. She served as a legal assistant in Philadelphia before graduating from the University of Virginia School of Law. She specializes in intellectual property rights, real estate, and defamation and has previously worked on celebrity cases. As noted by The Focus, she represented the daughter of Edith Hill, which involved singer Cher.

Rebecca MacDowell is a litigation and arbitration partner with Brown Rudnick. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s degree in political science and communication before attending the University of Virginia School of Law.
