It‘s Leonardo DiCaprio’s 47th birthday today November 11th and considering he began acting at the age of 5, his collection of movies is impressive. He has a total of 101 awards from 252 nominations and has been nominated for seven Academy Awards, five British Academy Film Awards, and eleven Screen Actors Guild Awards and is considered one of the best actors to have ever existed in Hollywood. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
DiCaprio plays Johnny Depp’s little brother in this award-winning film and is a testimony to his raw talent. Gilbert Grape (Depp) is a small-town young man with a lot of responsibilities like taking care of his mother (Darlene Cates), who is eating herself to death and is so overweight that she can‘t leave the house. Then there is his mentally impaired younger brother, Arnie played by DiCaprio. He prepared for the role by visiting a home for kids with mental disabilities and studying their mannerisms.
The Beach (2000)
Directed by Danny Boyle, The Beach is an adventure drama film based on a novel that follows Richard played by DiCaprio who meets Daffy, who shares a map to a pristine, uninhabited island in the Gulf of Thailand with a beautiful hidden beach. After he meets a young French couple, Françoise and Étienne, they decide to embark on the dangerous trek and eventually find a cult-like colony run by Sal, played by Tilda Swinton. While the film received mixed to negative reviews, its fascinating to watch DiCaprio lose himself in the role. Plus there is an epic love scene between the then 25-year-old and Swinton.
The Boys Life (1993)
The Boy’s Life is considered DiCaprio’s breakout role as a boy named Toby in the 1950’s coming of age drama. The harrowing, true story follows Toby, who lives with his single mother Caroline (Ellen Barkin), and his abusive stepfather, played by Robert Dinero. As his mother refuses to give up on the abusive marriage, it intensifies, and Toby plans an escape. The complex film brought a then 18-year-old DiCaprio amazing reviews and job offers.
Catch Me if You Can (2002)
With positive views all around, watching Catch Me if You Can will take up 2 hours and 21 minutes of your life but it’s worth it. Starring DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Amy Adams, Christopher Walken, Jennifer Garner, and more, you’ll recognize every face on the screen, in their younger form. Directed by Steven Spielberg it tells the story of Frank Abagnale Jr. played by DiCaprio, a teenage con-man who pretends to work multiple occupations to become one of the country‘s most notorious bank robbers at just 17 years. The baby-faced actor was 28 at the time when he played the teenager.
The Departed (2006)
Celebrating 15 years, since it’s release, The Departed is star-studded with A-listers. Directed by Martin Scorsese the action-packed thriller follows the hostility between the Boston police department and an Irish-American gang led by Costello (Jack Nicholson). When a gangster (Matt Damon) is chosen to infiltrate the police force, a young cop named Billy played by DiCaprio goes undercover within the gang.
