It’s Cinco de Mayo! The holiday is often confused with Mexican Independence Day (September 16, 1810), but it’s a day of remembrance, commemorating the Mexican army’s victory over the French forces during the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. History aside, the holiday has been used by many in the United States as a reason to eat tacos, drink tequila, and show up to work hungover the next day.

Salma Hayek has always been proud of her motherland and celebrates the cultural holidays on Instagram. Take a look at the Mexican actresses Cinco de Mayo posts over the years before you have one of our recommended cocktails.

From her stunning altars to dinner tables, Hayek has proven she knows how to decorate for the holidays. This year she shared a photo of her Cinco de Mayo table that was covered in chiles, Mexican flags, and flowers. She had her hands raised in the air and wrote in Spanish, “Thinking of my beautiful and beloved Mexico # happy5demayo🇲🇽 💔” The broken heart emoji is likely in regards to the tragic subway overpass collapse that took place in Mexico City on May 3rd.

In 2018 Hayek shared a photo posing next to a stunning original painting by the Mexican painter Diego Rivera. The mural artist was of course married to Frida Kahlo and their unusual love story and impact on Mexican and international art will never be forgotten.
