UPDATED JUNE 26, 2020 9:25 AM EDT

Although walking down the aisle is seen as the happy-ever-after for many people, such traditional expectations have been transplanted with a more relaxed cohabiting or happy-to-be-single mentality in recent times. Some couples – like  Kate Hudson ’s mom Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell – have failed marriages behind them and know that their commitment is just as strong without a piece of paper while others have simply never wanted to put a ring on it. Here we take a look at celebrities who have chosen an alternative root to society’s marital expectations...

Shakira

Colombian-born singer Shakira met Spanish soccer star Gerard Piqué on the set of her video Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) that she recorded for the 2010 World Cup and they started dating the following year. They’ve been together ever since and have two sons: Milan (born 2013) and Sasha (born 2015) but as to making it official, the Hips Don’t Lie singer stated in a 2014 interview that: “We already have what’s essential, you know? We have a union, a love for each other, and a baby. I think that those aspects of our relationship are already established, and marriage is not going to change them. But if I’m ever going to get married, he’s the one.”

In 2020, Shakira was named Latina Powerhouse Top100.

Oprah Winfrey

Talk show host turned media-mogul Oprah Winfrey has been in a relationship with Stedman Graham for over 30 years and she believes it’s been so successful precisely because they have never tied the knot. “His interpretation of what it means to be a husband and what it would mean for me to be a wife would have been pretty traditional, and I would not have been able to fit into that,” she explained to Vogue in 2017.

Winona Ryder

The Stranger Things actress opened up to The Edit in 2016 about her views on marriage: “I’d rather never have been married than been divorced a few times. Not that there’s anything wrong with divorce, but I don’t think I could do it if that was a possibility. When your parents are madly in love for 45 years, your standards are really high. But I’ve been happily with someone for quite a while now.” She has reportedly been in a relationship with Scott Mackinlay Hahn since 2011 and was engaged to Pirates Of The Caribbean star Johnny Depp in the early 1990s.
