Shakira and Gerard Pique’s 10-year relationship in their own words

The duo have put in the time, effort and work to build their respective careers. At home, the two have placed an emphasis on making their homelife work for their unique situations. In 2017, the Hips Don’t Lie singer told Viva magazine how things work out at home.

“We have never been a traditional couple,” she shared. “We don’t have a written deal to share the tasks or anything like that, but we both are very involved in parenting and try to sort it out the best we can, we support each other and we also find a huge help in our families. We don’t know a different way to do it!”

Shak and Gerard have tackled balancing careers, love and family together. One of the major gems that have made their romance last is working together even when they are apart.

Shakira opened up about their strong partnership. “As a partner, he supports me in everything I do,” she shared in 2017. “It is an important part of my well-being, as well as I of his and his joy that projects on the field. We talk about every aspect of our lives and work is one of them obviously.“

In 2013, shortly after meeting, Shakira got candid about how life as a single woman made her jaded about religion and her outlook on God. However, it was her meeting with her man that put things in perspective, even after knowing him for two short years.

“I think, if you can prove the existence of God, it can only be proven through love. I even had lost my faith for a while. I was becoming as agnostic,” she told Elle.

”And it was really hard, because I was always very religious, and for a few years, maybe because—it sounds so corny—I was not feeling the love like it was supposed to be, I started to think that there was no God. And suddenly I meet Gerard and the sun comes out.”

Gerard is certain that Shakira is the reason his life has changed for the better. After being in love with her for three years and seeing her as a mother to their first son Milan, the soccer star shared his admiration for his leading lady.

“I learn a lot by her side,” he told Huff Post in 2013. “Shakira has a very great career, knows a lot and has taught me a lot. She came into my life to transform it and that makes me very happy. She and Milan are my everything.”

There’s no such thing as a stupid question – especially when it leads to the love of your life. In 2016, Gerard revealed the question that helped him break the ice and land a chance to talk to his lady love (who was just his crush in 2010).

“It all started when we were in South Africa and I wrote to her. She was already there because she sang in the opening ceremony and I asked her what the weather was like. It is the typical stupid question, and the normal answer is to tell me to bring a jacket,” he told TV3.

”But she started telling me what the weather was like in every single moment and it got to the point where I told her we would have to get to the World Cup final to see her again—she was singing at the final.”

After almost a decade of romance and two children, Shakira and Gerard have nothing to prove. In 2020, the She Wolf songstress noted that she isn’t rushing marriage, honestly she isn’t thinking about it.

“To tell you the truth marriage scares the sh–t out of me. I don‘t want him to see me as the wife” she said in a candid interview with 60 Minutes. “I want him to see me as the lover, the girlfriend. I want to keep him on his toes. I want him to think that anything’s possible depending on behavior.”

In 2011, after months of speculation and hiding behind their love, Shakira and Piqué made things social media official. Sitting on his lap and posing for a selfie in front of a beautiful sunset, the pair smiled for the camera. And the caption couldn’t be cuter. “Les presento a mi sol,” she wrote ”I present to you my sunshine.”

As a mother of two and partner, Shakira admitted that it was the three men in her life who changed her mindset. Being a mother to Sasha and Milan, and lover to her darlin Piqué changed the way she looked at things.

“I used to be the center of my world, and now I am only a satellite of my children. It‘s the hardest job I’ve ever had,” she told HOLA! USA.

“I never thought it’d be so difficult, because it takes a lot of your energy. I think of my family a lot; I’m concerned about them all day. It’s physical, emotional, and intellectual wear and tear. Thinking of making an album seemed like a Herculean task, like climbing Mount Everest.”

When you know, you know. In 2013, after welcoming their first child, Shakira shared that there were no plans for marriage, but there was in fact a plan for a lifetime of love.

“We already have what‘s essential, you know? We have a union, a love for each other, and a baby. I think that those aspects of our relationship are already established, and marriage is not going to change them,” she told Glamour in 2014. ”But if I’m ever going to get married, he’s the one.”

Shakira and Gerard spent more time than ever with her love during times of quarantine. Being the proud, and supporting, love that she is, when Gerard participated in the internet’s latest challenge she was there for support.

“He’s a genius,” she shouted as her love kept a roll of toliet paper up with a tennis racket. It’s the simple things done at home that show how much they mean to each other.

Me Enemoré/I Fell in Love is one of the most specific songs about her love. The single, which debut in 2017, shares the special moments from their first meeting when she thought “he is still a child,” but decided to take a chance because she couldn’t stop thinking about his “round little mouth” and “little beard.” The song tells the story about how she fought against everything, took a chance and ended up with her love. Making it even better, the soccer star was her leading man in the video.

Gerard has been vocal about the love of his life. From opening up about the history of their romance, to his perspective on her as a mother and much more. However, in 2019 when he took to social media to share a picture of his lady, he only needed one word to caption the picture. And that one word said it all. “Art.”
