The actress's father, Eddie, famously divorced her mother in 1959 to marry Debbie's close friend Elizabeth Taylor, whom Carrie's mom once served as a matron-of-honor.
After Elizabeth's death in 2011, Carrie told <i>E! News</i>, "If my father had to divorce my mother for anyoneI'm so grateful that it was Elizabeth," adding "This was a remarkable woman who led her life to the fullest rather than complacently following one around."

Carrie married Paul Simon in 1983, but divorced the musician a year later in 1984. Discussing her failed marriage with Rolling Stone in 2016 she admitted, "I'm not good at relationships. I'm not cooperative enough. I couldn't give him the peace that he needed," Carrie explained. "We both had very interesting fights. It's all a shame, because he and I were very good together in the ways that we were good. But like I said, I don't supply someone with a really peaceful home."

She once said, "living with manic depression takes a tremendous amount of balls. ... At times, being bipolar can be an all-consuming challenge, requiring a lot of stamina and even more courage, so if you're living with this illness and functioning at all, it's something to be proud of, not ashamed of."
