This summer is all about texture and enhancing natural hair, from the face-framing fringe and air-dried waves to defined curls and messy beach buns. “This summer will be more texture for those sunny days outside,” says celebrity hairstylist Sami Knight, whose A-list clientele includes Adele, Rita Ora, and Gwen Stafani, just to name a few.

As we dive into the new season, we tapped into the stylists to the stars to share what hairstyles are a must-try this summer, how to get the look at home using UNITE Hair, plus pro tips on humidity-proofing your summer style, and which old school product is making a comeback.

ROUND, CURLY BOBS

“Summer is the perfect time to plunge into a shorter silhouette. It will help you stay cool on those hot summer days, but it will also help you avoid unnecessary heat styling. This classic bob is a must for anyone with natural texture and wants to show off their curls with minimal effort this season,” says two-time Emmy-winning celebrity hairstylist Barry Lee Moe. “In the shower, start with UNITE’s BOING Curl Shampoo and BOING Curl Conditioner and towel dry.”

“Apply 7SECONDS Detangler on damp hair, then comb through with your favorite wide tooth comb to evenly distribute. This will protect your hair from the sun while locking in moisture.”

“Next, apply UNITE’s BOING Defining Curl Cream from roots to ends and gently scrunch to awaken the texture. Allow the hair to air dry for the perfect, bouncy curls with ultimate definition and shine. You’re sure to turn heads at the pool with this effortless summer look.”

NATURAL TEXTURE

Now that we’re on the cusp of summer, it’s time to trade in your hot tools for products that will enhance your natural texture and add hydration and protection. To achieve supermodel Winnie Harlow’s moisture-drenched mane, celebrity stylist Davontae Washington used “BOING Curl Leave-In and BOING Defining Curl Cream to keep her curls soft and hydrated.”

BOING Curl Leave-In detangles, protects from UV + thermal damage, seals in moisture, keeps frizz out, and strengthens each strand, while the coconut-infused BOING Defining Curl Cream hydrates, defines, adds weightless volume and shine, and holds curls in place.

AIR-DRIED WAVES

“I think that texture in the hair is best when it looks like you didn’t do it with a hot tool to keep it looking effortless. Whether that means scrunching and coaxing texture out of your natural hair, adding in texture with no heat, like braiding, twisting, or using the indirect heat from a blow dryer,” says Sami.

“For very loose summer waves on straighter hair, half dry your hair, and add a generous spritz of UNITE’s BOING Curl Leave-In spray.”

“Section your hair into five large pieces and very loosely braid them down to the ends. Braid as far as you can down, and secure loosely with a hair elastic, trying not to leave a kink. You can let these air dry out in the sun or overnight and pull them out when they’re fully dry.”

“Tease apart with your fingers or use a wide tooth comb to loosen them without separating too much.”

“For extra added oomph, throw your head upside down and distribute a mandarin-sized pump of UNITE’s TEXTURIZA Finishing Foam through your tresses. This will dry fast and keep in that texture you just added looking gorgeous for longer.”

BABY BARDOT BANGS

“Inspired by the carefree, effortless hairstyles of Brigitte Bardot, this fun, flirty bang is versatile and easy to achieve, making it a stand-out look for the summer. A variation on the classic curtain bang, you can style this sexy fringe in many ways,” says Barry.

“To achieve the look, gently mist your bangs before adding UNITE’s ELEVATE Mousse to slightly damp hair.”

“For a full, face-framing look that drapes gently over your eyes, use your favorite round brush to gather the hair in the center of the forehead, and then blow it out.”

“For an alternative look, part your bangs in the center and blow dry each section separately. I like to pull each section to the opposite side of the face while drying. This encourages the hair to fall in place naturally, with the perfect center split to open up your face.”

“Finish either look with UNITE’s Le:Play Hairspray for long-lasting, flexible hold.“

“If you want some inspiration, head over to TikTok and check out all of the Pamela Anderson-inspired hair tutorials that wouldn’t be complete without this amazing Bardot-inspired fringe,” says Barry.

DEFINED CURLS

“Another big trend for summer, I think, is hair gel. Old school, but effective and perfect for defining curls, especially curly hairlines,” says Sami.

“If you’re naturally blessed with curly hair, apply a good coat of UNITE’s LIQUID Volume to your lengths, and scrunch dry it in to bring out the curls.”

“Use a small curling iron and wrap small sections down the length of the barrel, changing directions halfway down for a really natural look. Sometimes I even change directions three times on one piece of hair. Repeat this all over the head, just adding in some curls without over-defining.”

“Once you have enough curls, get your hands into the roots and shake, shake, shake, occasionally pulling your fingers through, to break apart the curls; the bigger, the better. Rub your fingers around in small circles at the scalp to make more volume without frizzing up the ends. I’ll often even use the end of a pin tail comb just to pull apart a clump of curls. The idea is to make it look as natural and luscious as possible.”

“After you’ve finished this, it might look a bit of a mess - here’s where you grab your GO247 Hair Gel. Squeeze a blob onto the back of your hand, and with a toothbrush or small natural bristle brush, dip into the gel, and define all around your hairline and part. Try and brush your hair into the way it wants to go, don’t fight the direction of growth. You can even get some gel onto your fingers and apply it further into the roots, pulling upwards to add lift. I like to dry the gel in with the hairdryer on medium heat low-speed setting on the hairdryer. In this case, a little crispiness/firm hold is a good thing. It’ll keep you looking fresh all day and on into the night. The best thing about the GO247’s Hair Gel is that it’s easy to brush out and won’t flake on you when you brush it through.”

“Finish the style with a spray of UNITE’s 7SECONDS Glossing Spray to add depth to those curls, making them look even more luscious and hydrated.”

HUMIDITY-PROOF WAVES

If you live in a humid climate or have a tropical vacation planned this summer, humidity-proof styles are a must. Take it from celebrity hairstylist Cesar DeLeon Ramirez who styled Ciara’s flawless mane in the Barbados heat for the 2022 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue cover.

“To beat the heat and humidity, I prepped Ciara’s damp hair with UNITE’s LAZER Straight Relaxing Fluid and blew it out while maintaining body and bounce. This styling lotion contains coconut oil to add moisture while sealing the cuticle, ideal for frizzy hair.”

“Once her hair was all dry, with beautiful movement, I went in with my flat iron and created soft bends to give the hair a lived-in texture.”

“I then applied UNITE’s TEXTURIZA Finishing Foam from roots to ends to give the hair just the right amount of soft texture and separation for a tousled texture look.”

BEACH BUN

From beach day to sunset soirée, this messy bun is the perfect hairstyle for hot summer nights. To achieve the look, start by styling your frizz-free, lived-in waves using Cesar’s humidity-proof must-haves (from the look above), and throw it up in a loose, effortless top knot, leaving out pieces to frame your face. Set the look with the brushable, 3-in-1 strength GO365 Hairspray for a crunch-free finish that lasts all day and night.
