Watch out, Mario Dedivanovic, your famous muse and client knows all about makeup! It only took Kim Kardashian 10 minutes to achieve her iconic “smokey look with a little bit of glitz and glow.” Just like an expert, the celebrity shared a step-by-step video to get one of her characteristic beauty looks. Moisturized skin, contouring, smokey eyes, and XL eyelashes are only some of the keys to this makeup look, which uses just a dash of glitz. Keep reading to get the details on her technique.
It’s all in the tools
In a video tutorial for Vogue, this entrepreneur showed off her extensive makeup know-how. “I’m not a make-up artist and never claimed to be, but after today, I might change that title,” she said mischievously.
We couldn’t agree more. The techniques she used are worthy of a professional, just like every one of her tools. Before starting, we want to tell you about the arsenal she uses to get the most out of her products.
- She once again reached for her beloved Kabuki brush from MAC. Practically mourning, she commented that they stopped making it more than 7 years ago and that she loves it so much that she’s had it since she was in college. But don’t worry, any brush of this type will work.
- She used a sponge to blend.
- To brush her eyebrows, she used the pencil brush from Anastasia Beverly Hills ($18).
- For her eyelashes, she chose the eyelash curler from Troy Surrat ($34) and the separator from Ulta Beauty ($5).
Now that we know what she considers essential for her makeup to be applied perfectly, it’s time to delve deeper into the steps:
1. Prepare skin
Kim always goes for “extra moisturizing,” as she calls it. “Even if I’ve already moisturized for the day, I put on moisturizer again... I like a little bit of an oily slip for the foundation,” she confesses.
2. Apply foundation
Kim “loves” the Soft Fluid Long Wear Foundation SPF 20 ($120). To apply it, she puts on a little on her hand, dips the brush in it, and starts gently dabbing it over her whole face. The KKW beauty boss also applied this on her eyelids, with a smaller brush.
The celeb confesses that she suffers from psoriasis and explains that she focuses a lot on camouflaging those patches on her skin. At this stage in the process, she seizes the opportunity to brush her well-defined, dark eyebrows with the Anastasia brush.
You probably don’t remember, but did you know that this celebrity’s eyebrows have changed? “In the ‘90s, in high school, I would make my brows so thin. Drew Barrymore was my everything inspiration,” she reminisced.
3. Time for concealer and a little powder
The celebrity says that one of the keys to her makeup is “covering up.” For this, she relies on her KKW Liquid Concealer ($18), which she applies generously under each eye, to her eyelids, and to the triangle formed by the edges of the eyebrows and nose.
She blends it with the help of a sponge, but she doesn’t focus too much on the eye area because she uses this little excess bit of concealer to get her eyeshadow and its smokey effect to bond better and look even more dazzling.
Just in the area with a little extra product under her eyes, she applies a touch of Baking Powder #2 from KKW Beauty ($18) , a translucent powder that has a light pink touch. “Every time I do my makeup, I bake. I love how baking looks, I swear,” she comments.
4. The magic of contouring
If there’s a makeup technique that belongs to Kim Kardashian, it’s contouring. The queen of this trick, which brightens and defines her face, is a true expert (she’s also made exclusive tutorials on contouring). She uses the Crème Contour & Highlight Sets ($32) from her brand. This stick has two tones, one lighter and one darker, and plays with the different colors in strategic areas.
She uses the dark shade for her cheeks, jawline, and hairline. A trick that makes her makeup so unique is that she outlines her lips with the dark side of the stick: “You can’t go too far up, because then you’ll look like you have a mustache,” she warns, laughing.
5. Eye shadow (smokey with a little glitz)
The mother of four starts with a neutral tone (a dark gray) from the KKW Beauty Smokey Volume I Palette ($30) and applies it across her whole upper eyelid, delicately blending it with a brush. Later, she takes the lighter tone (a bright beige) and applies it to the lower arch of her eyebrows. The result is astonishing.
She also applies the smokey effect right under her eyes. “I think I look really naked without it”, she comments. Later, it’s time for a little glitz. For this, she relies on the Stila Bronzed Bell ($24), a frosted liquid eyeshadow that she applies right in the middle of the upper eyelid and blends with her fingers. For a little extra sparkle, she applies a light gold-green eyeshadow on top of this (which is ideal for bringing lots of light to dark eyes).
6. Mile-long eyelashes
The key to achieving her impressive eyelashes lies in curling, separating, and applying several layers of mascara. First she curls them, showing off how perfect they look and assuring us that they are not extensions. Regarding mascara, she says, “My two favorite mascaras in the entire world are Lancôme Hypnose, Doll Lash ($27.50) and Charlotte Tilbury Legendary Lashes ($32),” and she uses both, making sure to get her eyelashes to pop from the roots to the tips.
“I like it to look like clumpy and messy,” she explains. She finishes off by using a separator to make them look even more stunning.
7. Eyeliner
This part is crucial to enhancing her look. She uses black KKW Bauty Smoke Eyeliner ($10) and applies it to the inside of her bottom eyelid.
8. Lips
“For my lips, I have been loving a dark liner,” she explains. She applies it to the borders of her lips, making light lines inside them and then blending it with her fingers. She reminds you to never forget to clean your hands, because if you do forget, it will be a disaster. Then, she uses a nude lipstick to fill in the space inside the lip liner and lastly, applies a bit of lip gloss.
9. Extra color
Now it’s time to work on those cheeks. “My all-time favorite blush is Nars Orgasm ($30) .” She then takes her favorite brush and applies this iconic blush.
10. Highlighter
“The last and final step is highlighter,” explains Kim. For this, she uses the Kylie Palette ($62) . She applies it just above her lips, and to strategic areas along the nose: under her nostrils, on the tip and the front, and ready to go!
10 steps and 10 minutes were enough for Kim Kardashian to get a casual makeup look that’s versatile enough to wear to parties and events. Would you dare to try it out?
