Matt Damon's man bun makes a return and more male stars who are fans of the trend

UPDATED MARCH 1, 2019 7:40 AM EST

Just like their female counterparts, men's ponytails and the ubiquitous "man bun" come in all different styles, shapes and sizes, and some high profile male celebs have, thankfully, been showing them off. There's the "I woke up like this" nape knot sported by Brad Pitt; Leonardo DiCaprio's slicked-back all-business bun; or going back a bit, David Beckham's pre-retirement game pony. Irish actor Aidan Turner, from The Hobbit and Poldark added an international spin to the look by calling his man bun a "mun".

Man buns, both new and old, have been topping the headlines all year. Matt Damon’s ponytail went viral after he appeared in early July in Beijing to promote his movie The Great Wall — and he got upstaged by his own hairdo. In March, fans mourned the loss of Jared Leto’s flowing locks after he cut off his man bun to play the Joker in Suicide Squad.

There were gasps around the world when Chris Hemsworth cut his locks earlier this year, after sporting long hair for more than six years. “I needed a trim... I got sick of it,” he told USA today. "Anyone who has long hair knows it takes a lot of work. It's all good. I can wake up and roll with the day without having to worry about it."

Thankfully there are still plenty of stars who are willing to go the extra mile for their long locks. So as summer is in full swing and men need to get that hair off their necks in the coolest way possible, here are 11 manly celebrity styles that tell a 'tail'.

Matt previously confessed on The Graham Norton Show that the last time he rocked the look, “There were 700 hair extensions. It was a full day to put them in. They flew somebody all the way to Beijing to put them in. Then I had to manage that hair. I have a whole new appreciation for my wife and daughter.”
