STORY OF THE WEEK
story of the week

The couple live quietly in a Surrey village, with
Lisa's two children from her first marriage,
Thomas, 12, and Talisa, ten.

A year after their tropical Fiji wedding, Will Carling and his wife Lisa are counting the weeks to the birth of their first baby. It's the calm after the storm for the rugby legend. After weathering five years of tumult, tears and romantic notoriety, he can now say: "I feel incredibly lucky for what has come out of it."

The world needs little reminder of how Will's first marriage to Julia Carling foundered after a year, amid talk of his high-profile friendship with Diana, Princess of Wales. His live in relationship with Ali Cockayne, mother of their baby son Henry, then ended in destructive turbulence and Will was branded with the "love rat" label that still lingers in tabloid tales.

And then Will, 35, met Lisa. The 37-year-old was organising Will's testimonial dinner to mark the end of his career but, ironically, the public condemnation of the subsequent love affair took such a toll on the former England captain's popularity that the testimonial tipped to raise him £500,000 was abandoned.

And now, a year after their secret wedding in Fiji, the two are happily ensconced in a family house in Surrey. Lisa is still events organiser and Will is involved with a company setting up a male lifestyle website. And how do they sum up their relatioship?. "This is a partnership I never thought I would have. I'm not searching for anything any more. Suddenly you are..." "...totally happy with that other person. For the first time I could spend every waking moment with Will," continues Lisa.
