defends his romance with a
single mother

Thoroughly modern Crown Prince Haakon Magnus of Norway is clearly not intending to let royal protocol stand in his way when it comes to affairs of the heart, as he made clear during an appearance on national TV last week. In a candid interview, the prince admitted he was in love with 26-year-old single mother Mette-Marit Tjessem, a student who was once a regular on the Oslo club scene and whose former partner has been found guilty of drug offences.

“Yes, I have a girlfriend named Mette-Marit… but a loving relationship needs time to grow and set roots. We will inform the Norwegian people if we decide to formalise our relationship,” Haakon promised, insisting that Mette-Marit’s party days are now over. The TV interview came after a police report, intended for the royal family and concerning the drug offences of the father of Mette-Marit’s child, was apparently leaked to the press.

Days after Haakon’s TV interview, the 26-year-old prince joined his parents and sister Martha Louise to celebrate Norwegian National Day, appearing on the palace balcony and attending various engagements in Oslo.
