“I’ve never been a Casanova,” claims George.
“I am in fact very serious when it comes to
love and fidelity. Unfortunately my work
comes first in my life and that has cost me
some relationships.”

It’s a triple whammy, packing all the emotional appeal of a true story combined with dramatic special effects and the heart-stopping presence of George Clooney, the Kentucky-born actor who made his name playing Dr Doug Ross in the hit TV series ER.

And Clooney fans are flocking to the cinema to see The Perfect Storm, a tale of a desperate struggle on the high seas in which George turns in a rugged portrayal of Billy Tyne, real-life captain of a fishing boat caught in a freak tempest off the North Atlantic Coast in 1991. Ever since his role as Dr Ross turned him into an international heart-throb, the actor has refused to sit quietly in the sex symbol box, consistently going after more unexpected films, like Three Kings (1999) and now The Perfect Storm. “It’s about an ordinary man, a fisherman, facing his biggest challenge: a massive storm endangering the lives of his crew,” says George of his latest role. “The classic story of a simple human being against impossible odds.”

The 39-year-old Taurean has been equally determined not to be told how to run his private life. His 1989 marriage to actress Talia Balsam ended within three years, and last year he broke up with his steady girlfriend, Celine Balitran. Some of his female co-stars are astonished that George is not a father yet. Two of them, Nicole Kidman and Michelle Pfeiffer each bet the actor $10,000 that he would be a father by the time he was 40. “They’ll lose,” says George with certainty. “Even though there is about a year left to my 40th birthday.”
