Kany Garcia is a beloved member of the arts community. Known for her intimate voice and her songwriting, Garcia was born in Puerto Rico and has won six Latin Grammy Awards while winning nominations for three Grammys.
The singer-songwriter recently made her debut as the protagonist of the legendary NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series where she sang songs including ‘DPM,’ ‘Mundo Inventado,’ and ‘Para Siempre.’ One her latest collaborations, “Te lo Agradezco” alongside Carin León has taken her to new heights of success in Mexico.
In 2020, Garcia became the most nominated performer in the Latin Grammys, an achievement that left her surprised. “That was a big surprise, especially for an album that was recorded at home with home microphones and even cellphones,” she said in Spanish to NBC News.
Her record, “Mesa para Dos,” was nominated for five categories, including some of the show’s most important, including album of the year and best singer-songwriter.
It made me immensely happy, especially because I’m not an urban artist. It’s true that urban musicians are living through a wonderful moment of visibility. But for me as a singer-songwriter, getting my music to play on the radio or be the face of a streaming playlist costs us triple the work,” she said.
In 2016, Garcia came out as queer, becoming one of the few notorious Latina artists who are out openly.
“In the world we live in, anyone who says it wasn’t scary to talk about the subject is lying,” she said to Billboard. “We live in a world that’s very lopsided when it comes to women and sexual orientation. I had terrible fears. But I also felt a huge need to go to all those red carpets — where you see your colleagues with their companions — with someone [I cared about].”
