Fairy tales do indeed exist, and Linedy Genao stands as living proof of this. Hailing from New York and born to Dominican parents, she has built a career in the world of theater through her passion and a stroke of luck. This journey has led her to win over even the most demanding producers in the industry. One such example is Andrew Lloyd Webber, who handpicked her as the leading star for his Broadway musical, “Bad Cinderella.”
Linedy’s interest in music sparked when she was young, as she became part of her church choir. During her teenage years, she discovered her ability to act and sing.
This marked the beginning of her journey into musical theater, where she participated in school plays and musicals. Despite her passion, she set aside those dreams and pursued a business administration degree at the University of Connecticut.
It seemed like Linedy’s life would revolve around finances and offices; she even worked at a bank. One day, however, she traded her office for an audition opportunity. They sought Latin talent for the musical “On Your Feet!” by Gloria and Emilio Estefan. Armed with little more than the experience she gained in high school, Linedy attended the casting and secured a role.
Linedy began to live her dream, but the COVID-19 pandemic hit and theaters shut down. The young woman with Dominican roots returned to her remote banking job and even contemplated giving up her passion. However, in 2022, she received a call to join the ensemble of the musical “Dear Evan Hansen.”
It was in 2023 when Linedy achieved the milestone of becoming the first Latina to portray an original character by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Following a series of challenging auditions, the young actress captured the legendary producer’s attention—known for works such as “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Cats.” Andrew chose her to breathe life into the character of Cinderella in his musical “Bad Cinderella.” This production narrates the story we all know, but in an unconventional manner that unveils a daring and self-assured princess.
